Jeff

I split my post off the Doublecut swingmill thread as it really didnt fit. I was just gabbin and forgot where I was. :)

I got a call from an old acquaintance this morning, Denny Willsie of Willsie Lumber in Freeland Michigan.  I was trying to explain to him about what a swingmill does, but its hard to do. Denny has been a sawmill man his whole life. Hes part of my Timber Buyers Network Website and one heck of a nice fellow.  Doesn't have a heck of a lot to do with this thread, other then I am finding out that our part of the country is still untapped when it comes to learning about and appreciating the swing mills.

Here Denny's contact page on the timber buyers network that has a couple older photos of his Mill Location. He has a record year this year. Cut 80,000 feet shy of 6 millon Feet on just the one head rig.

I just read your second link.

I think that there are good ideas on there for the portable mills also.

Does anyone have an idea how OSHA rules apply to those of us that run portable businesses without any employees besides ourselves?

I'm afraid August 12th will find us still rolling around picking our teeth and resting up from the Pig Roast the previous Saturday. We always head North that week but thanks for the invite.  :) You as well as Double Cut and Lucas should all be seriously considering the Great Lakes Logging Congress in Greenbay in September.

You might contact www.matsif.com and see if they can steer you towards safety info. They have a think safety program that covers many areas of the Forest Products industry.

Thanks for the info Jeff.
I'd love ot go to Greenbay but will have to check with the day job.  That's going to be close to our annual shutdown.  I'll see what I can do though.

P-T      OSHA rules do not apply to Owner Operators.   But it is a good Idea to look at some of those rules.  The last time I read up on osha  you had to have five employees for regs to kick in .  But if you have one employee , I would follow there recomendations to the letter just to CYA

Thanks for the info

I had to write a safety rules sheet for the mill when I went to apply for my liability insurance policy.  I used the link that Kirk posted along with the safety rules in my operator manual to write it.  My agent liked it but we're still waiting on the underwriter.
