Dad mentioned that he had happened across the diary of a member of Great Great Grandaddy's brigade in the Civil War. I found it online and have been reading it. This was a NC brigade attached to Lee's forces and is a private's accounting of his experiences from '61-'65. If you have tarheel roots it might be worth a gander.

I had seen the site before, but hadn't LOOKED at it properly, if you know what I mean.

And yea, I DID spend a bit of time there last night in between knitting...

You pick the country your ancestors are from, plug the surname in , and it does about 14 different major searches, and opens them all in new windows that you can then look through. VERY COOL
