Ouch!.......... 5 gallons of Bailey's end seal is listed at $55 including tax and shiping.  Does anyone have any alternatives that have worked well?   I am tempeted to check into some of the paint stores to see if they have any waste latex paint they will get rid of at low cost.   Paint can be a mess.......parafin wax has to be heated.....  what do you use?? ???

end sealer is worth every penny, even at the current market price.  paint, of any type, is not comparable.

I tried paint (latex, rustoleum, everything else) before using end sealer, end sealer gives better results and is actually cheaper per gallon then most paint. The only advantage to paint is if the wood is exposed to rain as the paint does not wash off.

Anchorseal had a recent price hick, like the first in some silly amount of time (years and years) It is still worth every penny.

Hmmm...  I just bought 5 gal of red Anchor Seal from UC Coating on 7/23.  $56.50 delivered to Falmouth, KY.....  I thought the price was reasonable for shipping a 5 gal bucket of liquid...

Just my $0.02....

O.K....... looks like the verdict is for commercial end sealer.   I have been using Bailey's and it appears to work well but I have had it soak in more than desired making two or three inches of the end unusable (I tend to use it in very hot weather on hardwoods).  The ends often have some cracking anyway so maybe thats not a big deal.  It also stays wet or liquid like months after application so when rehandling the boards it gets on your hands.  The MSDS says skin sensitivity can occur and skin contact is to be avoided.   ::)

I once had good luck with paint when I painted the end of the log before sawing.  I used some leftover latex that was over thickened and it worked great.   It was more than $10 per gallon but we avoided throwing it out.

Knowing this forum......... I it is likely that someone has a recepie from two generations back using some simple components.......  not that they would be legal now.........

rooffing cemnet dose work good dont take long to dry

Roofing cement seems like it would be messy once it's in the shop.  It would be a hassle to cut off the ends after drying.  Or your customers needing to cut the ends off.  Not being tranparent will make quarter sawing  and such a little trickier not being able to see the end grain.  Those last couple of inches it may soak in would be useless anyway if left untreated.

it wont soak in that far just use it until you are ready to mill i have had no problems

Mix roofing cement 50-50 with paint thinner and you can still see the end grain. It should be a pancake batter consistancy. I'm using it on treated posts that I'm making fence posts out of. Seals it up real good. I've used straight roof cement on the ends and it works well.

i was thinking of black foundation coating to maby i dont

Raphael

I've got a spray on latex rubber coating on my foundation (rubberwall), it'd make a good end sealer aside from being totally opaque and it may not be generally available.
I haven't noticed any over penetration with Anchorseal and it dries pretty fast.
