My cousin recently sold an old hay barn that was on his property. I was hoping to salvage some wood from it to build a small 24x18 barn of my own, but thats out of the question now. However, I read in a recent issue of Fine Woodworking about this guy who built a dream shop out of a reclaimed barn, and it was awesome! Granted, its way way out of my budget at this time, but I'd love to recycle a structure if I could. I live in northern illinois and with the urban sprawl out here, I'm seeing more and more beautiful barns being torn down... and in some cases torched for local fire departments to practice on. Do you guys know of an outfit in the northern illinois area that recycles old barns? I know there are a ton of places it seems out east... just wondering if there is anyone local?

Seems more and more companies out there looking for old barn timbers and sheeting. The "built" community designers builders and the like are putting more cash out there to source these materials. I see a time when it will be hard to find old barns "free for the taking". Good luck in your search.

I have a friend in Craig County Virginia that has ask me to help him get rid of two small barns. There are a lot of nice old weathered boards on them. He has ask me to saw lumber for a new horse barn there this spring. I have pic's for the asking and the barns are free. I can furnish you with full details.

40 years ago maybe longer my grandpa built his whole out of reclaimed lumber from a place that dismantaled old barns. There are some big timbers in the basement.

Chuck,
I am in Wisconsin, and would love to say I could do it but I can not.  This subject interests me too.  I may need to take down a big one some day in the not so distant future. (48x100'+ 3 level TF barn)  Lots of old growth fir-hemlock (40+ rings per inch on pieces I inspected.)

You may be able to find the resource you are looking for on the Timber Framers Guild forum.  They have forum specifically for barns, and it seems to get some activity.  I also would suggest posting a "wanted" add here on the Forestry Forum.

Oh also keep in mind that TF shop in the recent Fine Woodworking mag was fully insulated, your cost should not be that high if you are just going to reassemble it as a barn ;)
