I am going to buy a log splitter and am looking at a 30 ton deal at northern toolhttps://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=position"> Note:Please read the Forestry Forum's postion on this company over in Dallas.  Anybody had any experience with one of these splitters?  For family use, not a firewood business deal, but I don't want to end up with a POC.  Thanks

On Monday I purchased the 35 ton Huskey from Tractor Supply Company. They are made by Speeco out of Colorado. 12.5 Briggs CI sleeve, OV Engine. Motherinlaw had a dead oak son fell and you could not split it with an ax or wedges unless you were more determined than I. As it turned out, with the splitter, the wood would split but had a lot of fiber along the split. I've burned just over one tank of fuel, it has a lot more strength and endurance than I do. Not told wife about it yet. Gona try to wait till after Christmas. I did look at the ones offered by northern toolhttps://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?action=position"> Note:Please read the Forestry Forum's postion on this company, then you added shipping. I looked at the blue box store and did not like the 23 ton 5.5 HP Honda engines. Not enough eumph for me. Didn't look a the orange box store but did look at woodsplitter searched on this forum. The prefered maker was about twice what I paid. But for the most part, this unit will be used for my family's needs, not production. Good luck with your decision, hope this helps.

the only thing I'd recommend on log spliters is get the biggest you can buy, get a verticle/horizontal combination and get one with plastic fenders on it.

The metal fenders get bent all to heck from the wood hitting them, running into trees etc.
remember man that thy are dust.

A lifetime of wood splitting says even a POC is better than sledge & wedges -  :D :D

I concur, both statements include words of wisdom. :)

I bought the "big box store" 27 ton 7HP Honda engine version last year.  Works GREAT.  Much better than my old one.  Besides, I broke the handel on the the old one.  ;D

So far the 27 ton has split everthing I put under it, including some really knarley hickory crotch pieces.   They burn well too. ;)
Been there, done that.   Never got caught [/b]
