Has anyone used American or Eastern Hophornbeam for timber frame pegs?  I don't have any Locust locally, just wondering if it would be a good substitute.

If I recall correctly Hophornbean falls under the heading of "Ironwood".  Ironwood has been used quite successfully for pegs, also Oak and Hickory are good local choices.

In fact I've got some extra Hickory, you'll just have to rive around the worm holes.  :D

Use what you got is what I've always been told (within reason). For a peg you want strength, low shrink rate/dry, straight grained.

Black Locust is common down here. If you want a few  logs and you're close to I-395 I can drop them off on my way to MA.  I head up there every other week along I-395.
If I'm looking for locust I start with the land clearers/firewood processor/loggers and buy by the cord in 18-24' lengths green. Half ends up milled other half goes in the stove. Pretty wood, minimal sap wood, as hard as hickory, exceptional  rot resistance, stable- low shrink rate relative to other woods, heats well and inexpensive in log form.
Lot of stuff..

I live up near the Woodstock Fair grounds.  Maybe I could buy some 8 foot cants from that I can get in the pick-up.   I could then resaw it later to the dimension that I need for pegs.

It would give me an oppurtunity to talk about your Logosol as well.  May be just the thing I need to make some T&G flooring and paneling.

Sure.
I head up to Douglas,MA once every 10 days or so. Not a big deal to put a few logs in back of the truck and make a detour. All I need is a place to dump them.

I have the kiln & molder to complete the sawmill quiver. Mill the timbers, siding, roof sheathing, flooring, bead & cove etc.. Happy to share my experiences so far.
