I like to write and I appreciate folks that take the time to write.   We get hung up on Phone calls today and brief ones at that.  It's a shame because the written word is much like the smells of a hearty supper coming out of the kitchen.  If someone has taken the time to relay the picture in his head, it will trigger similar visions in yours.  There are extra benefits though.  When written well, we not only picture the scene but our minds will create sounds and smells to go along with it.

Here is an example of a note that was part of a written conversation I had with a friend of mine today.  It could have been written with 10 words and brushed off, but, it had some thought put into it and I have enjoyed reading it over and over.

My Dad's parents still had a garbage burner in their kitchen.  I remember Grampa would lift the lid and spit out his chew.  That house burned to the ground a couple years after Grandma died and it's a wonder that the occupants weren't killed.  In my minds eye, her house and Auntie Marie's next door still stand with their well-tended yards  between them. But alas, both houses were replaced with mega houses that spread the max amount allowed on a city lot. No yard, no grass, just concrete, except in my childhood memories of Pears and Pansies and Lilac trees and greengrass, cookies cakes and homemade Blackberry juice.
What a wonderful lady she was.

Arent' words great? :)

I love the written word; been a serious reader all my life.  Seen lots of movies made from books I've read;  not a single one did justice to the book.

I love sitting down and penning a letter....and I use a fountain pen too. I also love getting a well written letter. Writing a letter is a commitment. It takes time and a lot of thought. I love getting letters because I can read them, set them down and later read them again as many times as I want. Many times gleaning missed information. I can also file letters and read them years later, many times after the person is deceased. They become real treasures. Historians love letters. They've learned a lot about our ancestors, the War Between the States, the development of the west and much more from reading old letters. Now with electronics, we are losing the handwritten letter to the quickly dashed out notes of e-mails. It's a shame. Many people no longer sit down and write a well thought out letter that just may end up in history. People now just dash off a few lines electronically and they are lost forever in the bit and byte bucket of the universe.

It really is a vanishing art. Like Charlie says, so much of our history is gleaned from personal letters. Being left handed, I hated fountain pens and writing on blackboards. :D

.......fountain pen......

That's an item out of the past.   Maybe that would need an explanation.  :)

Your thoughts and message are well taken. Gives more meaning to the Christmas letters I received from some relatives who didn't send a printed letter, but instead pen'ed a hand-written letter. Now I better understand the warm feeling I had when reading their letters. I will try to remember that next year when in the middle of the busy season in the rush to get everything done.

(I'll bet your penmanship is great too) :)

I've always thought that writing was one of the few ways an individual could make a mark on the world for the long term, to be remembered long after they are gone.  I guess, as the title of this thread says, this may also be true of art.  But I think more people can write well then can carve marble or paint pictures.

Don't attribute irritating behavior to malevolence when mere stupidity will suffice as an explanation.

Fountain pens,I loved them in school. Everybody had them,Schafers (sp) were my favorite, you could get them with different colored clear barrels, and different colored ink cartriges. I sure wish I knew where I could get one today,I've looked for several years to no avail.

I enjoyed writing with the fountain pens also. They would move across the paper much easier than a ballpoint pen. As a result, I could write faster. Used them almost exclusively while I was in college.

I never was very good at writing, but I always enjoyed reading. I liked the old fountain pens. I never wrote any thing with them, I just squirted ink all over the kids sitting in front of me. I could take out that rubber tube of ink, give it a good squeeze and that thing would shoot ink father than most water pistols. 8)
