Tom

I take Ignorant trips all the time.  When I find something that I don't understand, I go to Google and try to find an answer.  Sometimes I find one and sometimes I just find something interesting that links to something else, that links to something else until I find something that teaches me something.  The trail can get pretty long.

Tonight, I was wondering, what is a Gyppo Forester?  I couldn't find anything on Google...might have typed something wrong... but I've heard the term Gyppo Logger before.  A chainsaw logger that frequents the boards calls himself that from time to time, so I entered "Gyppo Logger".   Google wanted to question me and asked if 'Gypo" was what I really wanted but the page had lots of Gyppo's on it so I hung in there.

The first few entries explained to me what a Gyppo Logger was. (It was a family logger who did his own contract logging and wouldn't join a Union.)  Later down the page, for some reason, I clicked on this link.  Link I clicked on   It is a neat story of the experiences of a logger who got tied up with the making of a movie as told by his doting daughter.  You should read it.

Sometimes following ones nose places him where he would never have been had he not been a little adventurous.  "You can't get there from here" happens too, and I've had to quit to get back. :-/ :P 8) :D

Anyway, I know what a Gyppo Logger is now and by deduction think I've figured out what a Gyppo Forester must be.   See what kind trip you sent me on, Gyppo Forester? :D

One of my all time favorite movies!  "Sometimes a great notion", also known as "Never give an inch"

Ohhh Yeaaaa, that was a great movei. My brothers and I saw it as kids, we were most impressed when Paul Newman sawed someone's desk in half with that great big Mcullich. When someone said that was dumb he growled
"Yea but it made me feel better "

So for years when we did something stupid we would just say "Yea bet it made me feel better".

Television made me what I am.

You would be surprised as to how popular that movie is out here.  I know several people that have copies, cause it is hard to find at the video store.  Florence... my old home town... sniff.

Thanks Tom, now I'm home sick. ;)

I think every trip Is : An Interest Trip and not an Ignorant one.  Sometime the trip beholds revelations, wonderment and reward-- other times-- we ask ourselves how did I get here ?  Kinda parrallels the journey of life in general, sometimes a pinch of ones self is the only thing that can help determine the level of consciousness that one's within . Gyppo's profile,  Missouri ( Forestry Degree) to Oregon to Washington seems short, three points of origin and 6 or 7 years of time, but the name seems to allude to some question as to the direction of what lies ahead !  I can only wish that his journey leads to much measurable satisfaction and the fact that he pauses and evaluates periodically probably assures It !   I too enjoyed the movie because of the subject matter and tenacious spirit and efforts exhibited by the loggers (Newman, Jackel, and Fonda) to overcome their obstacles.

The scene in the move of Brother trying to save brother from drowning is one that once seen, is never to be forgotten!

Aw...y'all figured me out. Early in my career (I moved to Oregon in the middle of the timber recession in the 80's) I moved an average of 3 times a year to find work in the profession. Some jobs lasted only 2 months to one of more than 6 years. At one time I worked up the Siletz river where the house from "Sometimes a Great Notion" is still located. I have a beautiful print over my mantle called "Pacific Spruce on the Siletz" that reminds me of that country. The artist is one from Oregon you might have heard of - Ken Brauner (see his work at //www.kenbrauner.com).

An interesting story: while at Oregon State University I took a class in Northwest Literature (hey, it rains a lot here and a guys got to do something at night besides watch the boob toob). The professor, upon hearing I was a forester told me he took one of his classes to watch the filming of Sometimes a Great Notion. One of the students was so taken with the logging going on that he changed his major to forestry. The professor asked me if I thought I might change my major to English. My reply was "Not yet, bub".

Yep, you got it all in this film, Tom.  You are so correct, Jeff.  I have a friend who ended up with the flyrod used in the flim.  It had been special made just for this film.  I have tried toget it a number of times, but alas, as good as I am at getting such items I have been low on the totem pole to get that pole.  Thank you Tom, for the memories of the film as well as the sites where much of the film was shot.
