Tonight I was watching the Antiques Roadshow on Public Television.  Their last item featured on the show was a wooden bowl carved from an elm burl.  The bowl was about 24" long by 16" wide by 8" tall.  It looked exquisite.  The appraisers said it was a native american bowl carved in the 1700's in the Canadian Maritimes by one of the local tribes there.

You could tell it was worth a good bit of money.  However, it was appraised at $40,000 to $60,000.  Incredible!!  Wish I had a pic.

Go you bowl turners!

I gave a friend's son a walnut crotch about a year ago.  He called me and asked me to say a few cherry logs for him recently, which I did last weekend.  He gave me this bowl that he turned from the crotch that I gave him last year.  I got the best end of that deal!!  Here is a pic.

Do ya have any idea how they can look at a wooden bowl, and say it was "native american bowl carved in the 1700's in the Canadian Maritimes by one of the local tribes there."  ??

I often wonder if they just make that stuff up, for 'show' time.  ::)

If you look at the bottom of the bowl you will see the date and name of the tribal elder who carved it  8)  ::)

WOW ...... $60,000 bucks for a wooden bowl. I think I would let mine go for half price. I would sign and date it too  ...... no charge.   ;D

I am a native American.  Born and reared right here in the good old USA.

I will be glad to supply some bowls for $60,000.   I well even be happy to put the date 1700BC on the bottome if it will help.  :P :)

WDH

If some of you bowl turner-types want to practice making that $60,000 masterpeice, I have some wood you could practice on  ;D.  Of course, we would have to go in together on halves!

...or, the lady of the house might have just put apples in it like they do today. :D

I've got one in the TV room that I made years ago, maybe around 1992AC that should be worth a lot of money.  It was placed beneath the holy grail video tube and caught all the the intelligence of the Gods as it leaked from the bottom.  There's been a lot of worshipping around bowl.  Yessiree bobcat.

WDH

All that intellignece should make it worth a lot more.  Much better to have an intelligent bowl.

I have some really old dirt. I mean, this stuff is old. I wonder if I could get on the show ???
The oil is all in Texas, but the dipsticks are in D.C.

Tom

What concerns me is how to keep the history with the bowl.  One of these days, a thousand years hence, they might not know how we used that bowl when worshipping the TV Gods.  Since the bowl has just caught the overflow intelligence I doubt it will remain.  If it gets tumped over the smarts'll run out.  They're hard to catch.  That's why not much intelligence comes out of the front of the TV.

TexasTimbers

Also, I think, that without the original potato chips or popcorn in the bowl I can't see paying that much.

Tom, not that you need anymore smarts, but tip dat bowl over yer head and wear it like a hat fer awhile.

(or better maybe tip it over on top da TV.  )

Ben Theur, you is so smart.  I have it on my head now and have been bathed in a glorious outpouring of liberal wisdom.  It pours over my ears and runs about my feet.  Hillary is beginning to look like Godiva and Al like King David. Blessed is the TV!  GLORY!

WDH

OK Tom,

We need a pic of you wearing the bowl  ;D.

(Me thinks TOM left some SOUR CREAM or CHEESE DIPPING SAUSE in that bowl before he put it on his head;) )  :D :P

It might play hard to get them smarts out of the bowl, I think it would be better to leave the bowl setting naturally and place the HEAD into the bowl, that way only spill the cream cheese that won't fit with the head in there ;) :o ::)

I gotta chip in here and say every time I see the title of this thread I want to check int to see what the score was and who won and why were talking about the Native American Bowl so far past football season.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

Be interesting to know what the original name was...............chief bowl, squaw bowl, brave bowl,  warrior bowl, Seminole bowl, redskin bowl, injun bowl, etc.  Almost assuredly, the "Native American Bowl" wasn't original and the name came about because of political correctness; might even have been a lawsuit over it.   ;D  ;D

I guess I should have titled the post, "Simple Carved Wood Bowl worth $60,000".  But, that would have got the bowl turners all lathered up.
