I hope this isn't too silly of  a question, but was wondering how many kiln samples I should have for a 1000 bdft load of red alder?

Not a silly question........none are.  :)

But, I'd think enough so that you know what is happening during the drying, and somewhat depending on how that 1mbf is stickered. A wide pile, not so high, or is a narrow pile, and high?  The deeper into the pile, the better knowledge of the drying rate overall.

A good idea of the number may be obtained from the kiln operators manual

Mike,

The rule of thumb is 1 sample board per every 5 MBF.

My kiln is 2 MBF, I am set up to take two packs on the cart.  I usually run two sample boards per charge.
