Just wanted to say hello now that I am a member and thank you all for making such an iformitive site. I stumbled on to this site when researching all of the mills availabe including new, used and home built. After many long talks with myself I ended up purchasing a 10 year old Woodmizer LT40HD with 1800 hours on it. I have only had it for a week but I have been sawing til dark every night after work. I don't know how long this spurt of enthusiasm will last but for now it's really got me hooked. I had an 18" pine on her tonight and when I flopped off the first 12" x 12' board and didn't see a knot in it, I felt like I had shot my first deer.
I must say that I am very impressed with the Wood-Mizer product and support. I couldn't believe it when I called about the reshapening program and the guy said I would be getting a welcome to owning a used Wood-Mizer mill package in the mail.
For the most part I am a build it yourself kind of guy but after watching a friend operate an LT40 I was amazed at the thought and engineering that goes into these mills. I would be forever building a mill like that and it probably still wouldn't work right.
Anyhow thanks again for all the info. I read one post on here last night  that when tested today tripled my bf output. Thats good info!!

  Thanks for the warm welcome!!

The post that tripled my production was a post that told about leaving the cluth egaged on the mill between cuts and also not pulling off the board untill after starting the next cut. So last night I did just that and found that I had plenty of time to pull off the board and stack it while the mill was making its cut rather than stopping the mill at the end of the track and pulling off the board as I had been doing.
I have a pile of my own logs that I started sawing. I think I cut three logs of my own before I had a trailer load of logs from a neighbor that I was working on. Now that his are done I'm back on my own logs again. My mill is very visible from the road so I have gotten a lot of inquiries while sawing. I live in a very small community and everyone knows me. The gossip chain is endless here so word travels fast.
I build iceboats among other things and always have trouble finding good clear lumber. When I do find it I pay dearly for it. I had been saving a pile of logs that should have made good lumber. The first couple of fellows that I asked to saw my logs didn't seem to excited to do them so I went to the logging show in Bangor,Maine and watched all the mills work . While on my field trip I became infected with sawmill fever and bought this used mill that I have now on the following day. I'll try to get some mill pics posted asap.

Welcome LogDawg,
Orange sure is a pretty color, looks like that old mill found a friend.
Why are you stopping at dark?  Add some lights and keep on cutting.

I built a 4 poster shed with 2 walls for my first mill so I could saw in all kinds of weather.

Save some of those first boards, write your thoughts on them, date them and stick them where they will be safe, but can be seen.  Years from now those boards will help bring back the memories of these first days.

Happy sawing.
I am in the pink when sawing cedar.

Hi Cedarman,

Funny you should mention first boards. My first log was a nasty old maple that I cut while clearing an area next to a rifle range at a summer camp. Not knowing sharp from dull and the sounds of the saw I chunked that old narly maple up into boards feeling like a proud father of a newborn baby. When stacking the boards I noticed some shiny spots glistening in the sun. Upon closer examination I counted 20 rifle slugs in one board. There were acutally slugs in every board that I had cut from that log. So needless to say those boards  will be used for a special project. I just don't know how I'm going to plane them. LOL.
I would saw after dark but I would be dodging slugs from my neighbors house. I put a couple of clear pine planks in front of his workshop last night. I thought it might help him cope with the noise.
