So now I need to pull logs lift slabs ect all with one machine. Does anyone know anything about tthis tractor do they hold up and can you get parts? Thanks JT  :)

Is that a Duetz diesel motor?  They are suppose to be real good.  A friend has a Duetz tractor and loves it.

J_T,

The IH 826 was made around 1970.  Along about that time US tractor manufacturers where having some of their tractors/engines made in Germany.  Do you know if that is the case with this tractor or has someone changed the engine?

That tractor originally had a 358 cubic inch 6 cylinder engine rated at 92 hp.  It was made by IH but my info doesn't tell where.  They evidentally made it for only a short period of time.  They also made it with a hydrostatic transmission as an option.  I personally would avoid that like the plague.

I scanned through the FASTLINE publication thinking I could get the selling price for an 826 but didn't see a single one listed.

Unless you know and trust the owner or I wouldn't drive that far to look at it myself.  You could call the local dealer (which is now probably New Holland) and find out more about it and parts availibility.

Experience with machinery has convinced me to make sure that what I buy is what I want and need and not just cheap.

We use a 55 hp tractor with 4WD and a loader.  I like the manuverability of a smaller tractor and the 4 WD is a must logging in hilly ground  and lifting heavy stuff with a loader.

Your CASE IH dealer should have info & parts I don't know about the German motor though. The 445 Long and the 5040 Allis were made by Fiat I think

JT, if you really want to find out about a tractor, have the dealer look it up by Serial #, not just model #.  I once rebuilt the engine in a Massey Ferg, and ordered the cylinder sleeves 3 times. They came in wrong each time. The dealer asked me for the serial number, and found that I had one of less than a hundred made with this version of the engine. They finally located the sleeves in a warehouse in England, and it took six weeks to get them.

Go look at the tractor.  It is impossible to drive 450 miles in this country, without seeing something that makes the trip worthwhile. If you buy the tractor, you get to do the trip over again, and see all the things you missed the first time. :)

I saw a long tractor last saturday.  not sure but over 50 horse it lookedlike one rugged 4x4.  the owner just lugged it around at low rpm dragging oak and lifting them up.  its front tires were like as big as my 30 horse back ones.

I know a few people who have Long tractors and like them all right  but I don't know what model they have.

The U445 is a utility tractor which is much better for logging (in my opinion) that a rowcrop tractor like the IH 826.

According to the Nebraska Tractor Tests (1972)   the 445 was made in Romania and has a Uzina 3 cyl engine with 143 CID and rated at 42 hp.  During 46 hrs of testing,  broken rings were found on two of the cylinders.

Some of the Long tractors had Perkins engines whould would make them a lot more attractive to me.
