It's a D ring and it is used for rappeling.

Rader67 has the correct answer.  Stew, if you are ever up this way , I will buy you dinner. Since you owe me a meal from a previous whatzit, we will be buying each other dinner. 8) ;D  I am thinking Stew has used  a D ring before.

I used that D ring on several occasions while I was on my goverment paid tropical vacation. Jeff B's thread about Stamp and the chopper reminded me of the D ring I stole and brought home. Please don't tell anyone, the Army will be wanting it back. ;D

That's a deal Bob. I still remember owing you a meal.

I have used many D rings before, at least a couple hundred times with Uncle Sam. I lost count on my own time. I was a rappel master on the Boy Scout COPE course. I may even be able to dig up some pictures.

The first pictue is of the 60 ft practice tower we used . The second picture is of someone going down the wall side . I hated going down the wall side because of the risk of slipping and smacking the wall. The open side was fun, just pull up about 10 ft of slack in the rope and jump off backwards. 8) Afer a few practices on the tower we got to do the chopper thing. The chopper rappel was easier because we jumped from 100 ft, giving more time to get things under control before reaching the ground. Of course , we did use a longer rope.

Well, I'm glad that I didn't post my first guess that you got a new nose ring, cause that woulda looked foolish at this point.
I can change my profile okay. No errors. If you can,t remove all the extra info in other fields and try.

Are you saying you think that I would look foolish with a nose ring? :o  I don't know about the looking part, but I know it would not feel good when the witch gave a good tug on that ring if it was in my nose. ::)

We had that happen once from a chopper, but that is another story that I have only told Tom about. ;D

I have to scan some pictures in, but this one is of me dropping a guy off the Trust Fall on the COPE course.

I wish you could have been in the back of my Huey one day at Ft. Benning when a crusty old rappell master was trying to get a baby-faced butter-bar lieutenant to rappell out down through a hover-hole in the pines.  The kid froze and the RM called him everything but a human being.  Kid rode back to the PZ with us.

Maybe the same day I was doing whatever they call that thing where they suspend a long line from the cargo hook, drop it down into a hover-hole and four guys hook up for a "suspended" joy ride.  I was the most nervious one of the bunch.  I was trying to keep it slow and smooth when the rappell master said "kick it up to about 60 knots and give them a good ride.

Anybody know what that ride is called?

Slabs, we never had anybody refuse to go out of a chopper , but I did witness three guys refuse to go out one side of the chopper. Seems they didn't trust the sargent helping them hook the rope to the D ring. :(

I have seen the long rope with four guys on the end. They used it to extract the Recon guys from the jungle. It is kind of different to be out on a long hike in the woods and look up and see people flying through the air on the end of a long rope. :o I have not  traveled that way and can't say I ever want to. ;)
