Some of you may remember a earlier thread on the building of our barn, raised in October 2005. thought I would share the completion. Obviously my data stamp needs a fixing.. here is part one  https://forestryforum.com/board/index.php?topic=12938.0  Additional pics in my gallery.

That is one AWESOME barn.  I just noticed your new pix in the gallery and wow.  Now I need to read your previous posts and see how you got the finished product.

Beautiful job- gives me ideas I want to try now like the vertical siding and doors.  Do you have a close up of the siding and can you tell us what it is and how it's fastened?  Thanks for sharing.

That's a fine barn.  I especially like the naturally darkening wood on the end.

TW

Very well done.

This timberframing is fantastic. We have nothing like that around here.

beetle

LJ,

Framing is all EWP. Siding is Hemlock, ship lapped, fastened with 3" spiral nails. Stalls were done with a mix of Red and White Oak grade outs. The loft floor is full cut 5/4 tounge and groove Maple resting on full cut 4x8 joists 24" OC which made a very nice solid deck.

Very nice!

I like the picture of the goat goofing off in the picture. :)

Beetle,

Great looking barn,  I have a similar design down on paper which may never make it to reality :-\ but I still have a couple questions:

- How many splices are in your top plates, what type of splices did you use and where do they fall in relation to post or braces?  I think one is visible in the pics above but its hard to tell.  You mentioned yours are 36', mine are currently drawn up at 42' and may need two splices each to keep availability and raising issues to a minimum.

- Did you consider running your rafters beyond the wall to make an eve?  I am debating whether this reduces rafter life even with a fascia board covering rafter ends.

Thanks,
Keith

beetle

Keith,

I have one splice on my 36' top plates, I utilized one 24 footer and one 14 footer so I had plenty of stock to work. I chose the halved and bridled scarf joint, I selected this scarf because I was new to timber framing and I felt this one would fit my skill level yet still provide reasonable strength. Location is right over the post/plate brace pocket, which as I understand is the location where the least amount of stress is located. My rafter tails are extended beyond the plate .I will try to load a picture of the scarf this weekend.

PS. My perlin plates have two scarf joints each, I was not keen on attempting to raise 24 footers 25'+ in the air since these were hand raised.

Very nice, always better with pictures. How thick would the siding be?
