I suppose you've already tried a "fish finder", the last one I tried had a pretty good read on the bottom shape, but I suspect it would be tough to figure out the difference between good logs, rocks, and alligators.  How often do you hitch onto something with teeth?  I'll take the snow and cold anyday.

Awwwwwww, them Gators won't bother ya none.  I DID have a staredown with one last week. My son was checkin the bottom, and this Gator was layin in a small depression of the bank. It suddenly took interest in the white buoy float that Ed uses to keep me in sight of where he is. The Gator swam off the bank and was swimmin against the current, about 8' off the port side of the boat, I kept the engines in and out of gear, so the Gator would eventually lose sight of the float. She finally eased back into the depression and we went on downstream. I'm SURE she had a nest close by. She was a "new" mommy of about 8'. Probably one of her first batches. ;D
Didja have one that can see under the mud and sand??? Most of the logs are barely peeking out of the bottom or are jusy covered. Fish finders Don'T work in those circumstances.

Have you tried a flasher unit? I haven't used one, but I have been told many, many times that someome who knows how to use one can tell exactly what the bottom is made up of, as well as the first few feet on soft bottoms. I guess if the logs are more dense then the mud you might be able to figure it out. Now if you hit a big pile, that might be a problem. :-/ :-/
Oh well, just a thought.

Fla._,
My time in Florida, I don't recall any current in rivers. Are you in tide region were you get the effect of tideal run off?

Fla._Deadheader

"D", we are in the largest river in Fl, the St. John's. It runs for well over 200 miles, from SOUTH to NORTH. It is tidal affected, but, this time of year, especially, all the lakes and Everglades tributaries, are lowered for the Hurricane season. Most of that excess water goes into the St. John's and heads for Jacksonville and the Atlantic Ocean.
The Oklawaha, where we are currently working, was low and slow last week, this past week, it is up and running. My son had a tough time holding on to the last log we raised. That's why we went looking elsewhere.

Too many irons in the fire...

The list can go on.

Between a full time job, helping on the farm, helping a few friends move, and a few other side projects there leaves little time to surf the web.
