Air cooled engines, like on most smaller mills, run hot .I use nothing but synthetic oil and belive it will extend their life. Also I will add some synthetic mix chainsaw gas to the fuel tank to help lube the upper end.The extra cost of synthetic in a small engine is chump change.Cold weather starting is aided greatly, and synthetics can take the heat.Any comments on this important matter, what are you guys doing?? i never thought much about it, i always use castrol in all my engines regardless of size and never had a problem. it may be better as you say with synthetics, ijust don't really know. in my honda you are correct it would not cost alot extra to run the higher priced oil. but i change my oil and filter every 50 hours run time or so. i probably waste more money on oil changes than others do on gas. :D the oil i drain out is still good looking oil.

Can't get it down here. Castrol blend is all they sell.

Just turned over 5000 on an onan 24 and never had anything but Mobile 1.. you are right for 3 quarts the price difference is nothing.  The price has skyrocketed in the last couple of years though.  It's about the only thing I buy at one of the chain parts houses. They have a program where evertime you buy $20 worth they stamp your card and when you get up to $100 they give you a $20 gift card.  That helps some.
Work's fine for killing time but it's a shaky way to make a living.

Wouldn't use anything else have it in everything I own.

Including my saws I use amsoil syn mixed 100:1 and have never blown a saw up in 15 plus years. I have quite a few people bring me their saws for repairs and always tune them for 100:1 some of them were 40 plus years old and they run like a champ.  Best thing going in my opinion

I use Amsoil 100:1 as well.  Have for years.  I've never had an engine related problem with any motor i've used it in.  Use their oil in my trucks too.

I use synthetic in both the Honda 24 h.p. on my Peterson and
in my chainsaw mix.
Bi-VacAtional:  Piano tuner and sawyer.  (Use one to take a vacation from the other.) Have two Stihl 090s, one Stihl 075, Echo CS8000, Echo 346,  two Homely-ite 27AVs, Peterson 10" Swingblade Winch Production Frame, 36" and 54"Alaskan mills, and a sore back.

Our Onan 24 on the mill has always had Sheaffers 15w40. I believe it is a parrafin based oil, whatever that means. Haven't been able to get the Scheaffers, so last week I used Ce-pen-co 15w40 parrafin based. The motor has over 3200 hours and runs like a top. Oil was changed supposedly every 25 hours, although I have been doing it every 40.

15w40 heavy duty deisel oil in most everything: small engines, trucks, motorcycle.  Well, not the chainsaw.  27hp Kohler gets 10w30.  Change it every 25 to 40 hrs.

Another proud AMSoil user.  I use it in all my vehicles and two cycle engines.  Have for probably ten to fifteen years.  I've never had an engine with wear problems.  I run a small fleet of E350 cube trucks.  My mechanic had to tear into one last summer and he was amazed at no wear on the crank bearings.  Said it looked like new.  The engine had 40-50000 miles since it was rebuilt, (before I bought it)
In my work I use leaf blowers semi regularly and of course firewood cutting for personal, (probably 15 cord per year).  The saws all run great and rarely need adjusting, even my old poulan that my son ran straight fuel in for half a tank.
