I took a short video so you could see whats going on here. I put fresh gas in it and ran it for awhile to see if it would get better as it had old gas in it. If you pull the choke out just a little, it seems to get better when its revved up, but it doesn't help at idle. I could see the governor surging on it. Maybe its still the old gas? Any ideas?  It actually sounds worse in person then it does on the video

That really sounds like a lean mixture and the governor trying to compensate. Lean running can be caused by a lack of fuel or an excess of air, BUT... if it had stale fuel in it then I'd guess that the carb is a bit plugged. Running the carb through a short bath in an ultrasonic cleaner followed by assembly with new gaskets and a new fuel filter  (after flushing the tank) should straighten it up right quick.

cheers eh?

PS :: make sure you have your heart meds close by when they tell you the price of the carb gaskets.... don't say I didn't warn ya :)

My riding mower does exactly the same thing if there is old gas and water in the tank, I have to drain the tank and the carb bowl and put in fresh gas and it runs fine then. Happens if I leave it outside uncovered for a few mo.
Been doing so much with so little for so long I can now do anything with nothing, except help from y'all!
By the way rbarshaw is short for Robert Barshaw.

Look at your fuel line's close for crack's also there is a filter in the pump take it apart and clean it i've had the same problem it might be eather, also a weak batery will cause the same problem at idle

Jeff you have junk in the fuel bowl on the carb.  Unscrew the top and take out the gas and junk with a blow gun or a paper towel.   Better yet have the carb rebuilt at a local shop, but the paper towel will work and 95 per cent the carb doesent leak even reusing the old top gasket.  I have done it 3 times now in between one carb rebuild.

Thanks Guys.  I''ve had the carb apart several times to clean it so I know the drill on this one. Thats what I'll do.  :)

Check the govener spring :-\

Jeff

Governor spring is OK. thats actually the first thing I looked at. I'm pretty sure the guys are right about the carb. If it quits raining today I'll go out and work on it. :)

Good advice above Jeff,to use a "small hammer"first you could drain as much gas out as possible and add some Seafoam additive and run it a wile that stuff is fantastic and made out in your neighborhood.Around here most NAPA stores carry it.I put it in all my small engine gas. Frank C.

Jeff,

The likage from the carburator to the governor should not have any slop in it. On  B & S engines, they have a small spring to take up any "play''.  With this "play", the engine will slow down, then the governor will open wide open.

Jeff

No slop in it.  You can see it surge with the engine, but its tight.

Jeff I had to clean mine out 3 weeks after carb rebuid.  BTW run only gas above the regular 87 octane in your onan to cut down on carbon build up.  I do mid grade and every fifth fill I go for the expensive.

Thing I learned from leaving gas in the lawnmower all winter. Fill it up with fresh gas and put about a half of a container of Wynns(or any other brand) fuel injector cleaner. It does work everytime...for me...

I have a 20 hp onan on my mill, and I went out the other day to start sawing and it seemed to be missing bad, it was cutting in and out on 1 cyl, I checked the plugs and wires they were fine, but it seemed to have very weak spark on 1 side. I took the coil off and measured the resistance between the 2 posts and there was quite a difference, so I am going to order a new coil on Monday and I hope this is the problem, any of you guys had a coil go bad overnight?

D Martin

The last time I had a carb rebuilt @ a small engine repair facility the tec said  "because of the 10% ethanohl, gas sucks in moisture that rusts the metal parts in carbs, the best way to store  an engine these days in periods that engine won't be running for a few months, is to drain the tank and run the engine to drain the carb dry".

Drew b

"any of you guys had a coil go bad overnight?"  Yup. I've replaced the coil twice over the years.

Drew b

Sounds like a fuel filter problem.
