I got a treat today. I have only observed this two other times in god knows how many hundreds of thousands of logs. I only got two boards. a 1 by 6 and a 1 by 8 10 feet long. The boards are completely peppered through and through and the full length. I don't know if Birdseye occurs in Aspen but if it does this is it! I don't know what to do with it. How to dry it or nothing. Its not a lot of wood but seems like it would make an amazing small project. (Hence my first thread, drying lumber for small projects)

Is it or isnt it?

Jeff,
That's real pretty wood. Wether is is "Birds eye" or not shouldn't make a difference. I'm sure there is some wood workers that would go crazy over it. If you wanted too, you could sell it on E-Bay.
Mobile Demension sawmill, Bobcat 873 loader, 3 dry kilns and a long "to do" list.

I'd say that is birdseye. True birdseyes start pin size and get a little bigger in each successive growth ring, the same way a knot does, but birdseye are not knots.

I am told that each eye has all the genetic information of the tree.

Jeff,
Dry it very carefully, Maybe 4 or 5 layers down in a pile of some sort of stickered wood and out of the direct sun and put some window fans on it for a week or two  ( it needs good air flow).  This will get you by the most crucial drying time.  When it gets down to 12% moisture content you can bring it inside to acclimate to the house environment (6 to 8%) then you can make something really nice with the pieces. 8)

I wouldn't sell it!!

Jeff, if it's already inside, just make sure you have good air circulation until the moisture content drops.

of all the plain aspen I have cut around here just two boards of all of them so far I have planed showed curly figure.  It is good to see that such a plain tree can go curly and birdseye.
