Lumber in the "Slab" pile...

He waited too long with his logs on the ground.  Mostly Cherrybark oak with some Water oak.  We probably pushed off 20 logs and then I had to slab off all of the sapwood.  At least he did get 1400BF of heart lumber.  A good day, but it could have been 2-3 good days...

Do you charge by the hour for something like that?

Since this job was so far away (102 miles), I took his log description, quoted a "setup charge", and agreed to saw it by  the BF.  This is one that I goofed on.  Should have quoted hourly rate......Well, you can't win them all.

Yes.  I used a chainsaw to cut stickers for years, but now use this Craftsman cordless with a Lithium battery.  Much safer and easier.   I get the stickers from a local moulding manufacturer for free.  Mostly KD poplar.

Shame he let them ruin there looks like there was a lot of good lumber that would hhave been in those slabs

how old were the logs? looks like the bark didn't fall off yet, looking at the photo i think i would have sawed them for the customer. we saw a hellava lot junkier logs than that. just my opinon
