I saw this at a parts dealers shop today and wondered if anyone here had experience with one of these saws?  It is a Mercury, Kiekhaefer air cooled. Also, the name Disston is on the cover. I doubt a workmans comp agent would be impressed if he saw it on a job site  :o

That's a Disston DA-211. They're good saws, heavy, but can be run in one-man mode if you're feeling tough. I've got two of the Disston KB-7 saws which are larger, similar twin cylinder units that can only be run in two-man mode.

Thanks for the info, I knew someone here would have the correct answer.  I guessed at the word mercury because the housing from the point of the y is broken off. Now I see what I thought was an 'r' is actually a 't' which is on the starter cover - murcuty.

Kiekhaefer is none other than Carl Kiekhaefer, founder of Kiekhaefer Manufacturing who was the builder of the world famous Mercury outboard motors. I guess they made a saw powerhead too.

I remember seeing a few of these back in the early 50's. Heavy, took a good man to tote the business end all day. Ran a mix of outboard motor oil and gasoline, about 20:1.

Kiekhaefer did make those engines for Disston but failed to live up to the terms of the contract. After a nasty lawsuit, Disston apparently  tried to make their own and Carl took them to court, the company gave up and the left over engines were put on Wajax fire pumps. I had one, no way I wanted to back pack it. By this time the market for two man saws was pretty much done.

If you've ever seen one run they sound just like a boat motor for good reason .
