I think I just made a big mistake. One of those popups from Microsoft came up saying that IE 8 was ready to be downloaded. So I though what the heck, OK. Now I have many problems including lines on the Forum that are in the wrong place. Plus when I type a reply, as I fill the box it keeps scrolling to the top where I can't see what I'm typing.

So I started looking for a way to uninstall with nothing found. Then I got to a Microsoft page that said that problems with IE 8 were caused by registry problems and I should download their favorite registry cleaner. So I did and the first scan found 688 errors, but would only fix two unless I paid them $40 for a registered copy. So I uninstalled that garbage, but not before they offered me a free copy.  >:(

I was just getting comfortable with Microsloth after having good luck with the Windows 7 trial version.  (I like it a lot. Super fast compared to XP.)

So now I have to get back to work before I get rained out again and must leave it for now. Anyone know how to get rid of IE 8 and go back to the previous version that worked fine?

Gary,

Did you go to Start | Control Panel | Add or Remove Programs | Windows Internet Explorer? Click Remove.

If that works, go here:

http://www.filehippo.com/download_internet_explorer_xp/3282/ ; (IE 7)

I'm sure many here would advise you to give up on IE and switch to Firefox.

As for cleaning out those 688 registry errors, use CCleaner which is free and works.

http://www.filehippo.com/download_ccleaner/ ; (Uncheck all but the first check box (list of several) when you install it.)

Make sure Cleaner is selected on the extreme left, and click Analyze (bottom left) and then Run Cleaner (bottom right).
Highlight Registry (extreme left under Cleaner) click Scan for Issues and then Fix Selected Issues.

(FYI, if you have a Product Key for Windows 2000, you can use an upgrade version of Windows 7.)

There is no need to say 'unleaded regular gas'. It's all unleaded. Just say 'regular gas'. It's not the 70s anymore. (At least that's what my wife tells me.)

Is there a way to prevent the IE8 popup?  I don't want it and want it to quit asking.    I have to tell it NO every few days.

When it comes up, you should be able to select custom install, then uncheck the box for IE8 and it should give you an option to not ask again when you click next or finish. (Nothing will be installed if you uncheck the box)

Same here Gary. I wish I had left well enough alone. Did you have success with enstalling your older IE version back?

Thanks Radar.  I did it on the DW's computer, but didn't remember how, so it just keeps re-appearing on my laptop.  I'll fix that sucker now..... :D

If you want to reinstall an earlier version, go out to the web and download the earlier version's set up file, then you can uninstall 8 through the control panel, add/remove programs. As a back up, I would download and install Firefox so I could get out to the internet if something goes wrong. Then, as long as you have Firefox running, just forget about IE and continue with Firefox. All problems solved. ;) :D
