got that sawmill bug already ;)

Milled 100 board feet with the CSM last weekend...ordering the LT10 tomorrow! :D

Actually already got the quote and everything but will be out of town today so told them I'd pay for it tomorrow...it's 230 miles away so shipping won't take long either :D

Should be milling MUCH more lumber in a couple weeks!  WhooHoo!

Hello there.

I didn't read all the replies, but as to your initial post: If I wanted a 5/8" thick finished board for wall paneling, I would make 3/4" cuts on my bandsaw mill. After they dried a few months, I'd then run the best side through the planer and leave the back side rough. That way I'm only worried about getting one good face side. My mill doesn't lose much material thickness with each blade run. That makes for a lot less planing (and work.) God bless.

erik,
i built my house without osb or plywood, simply because i had the mill and the logs. it took some time but i didnt notice since i wasnt spending that much money. we put it all up green too. we also made our own paneling out of red oak sawed 3/8''x 8'' lapped 1.5'' and screwed down to the studs.we made some out of eastern red cedar and left it live edged  and just lapped it to cover.we did full sheet the outside walls and roof with 1'' oak. i sawed it all with my bandmill.

if i had it to do over i would put a liner on the inside of the studs for a lil extra draft barrier and to cover up the insulation. it shows through some of the cracks in the oak paneling. we used house wrap on the outside under the siding but  little extra wouldnt hurt. i will post some pics of the paneling.pc

first one is the oak paneling and the second is the live edge erc paneling. the thinner cuts made my logs go quite a little bit farther. pc

3/8"  wow!  I was thinking 1/2" was about as thin as I should go??

When you say lapped them 1 1/2" do you mean you cut them into shiplap?

if you set a band mill like my ez boardwalk 40 on 1/2'' you end up with about a 3/8'' board.
it was easy to remember. no extra machining. lapped over . no ship lap. we used 1 5/8'' sheet rock screws to put it up and only put screws in the lap except for the bottom piece and the top piece which had extra in them.
lj mathias did some on the outside of his house that had live edges on it. looked real good.

the paneling on the inside of my house was not run thru a planer. very small saw marks in it. we were kinda going for rustic so this fit real well. it really looked plain until i sprayed it with polyeurathane. that made the grain stand out and gave it a shine. i cut some paneling like this for a friend or 2 and they brushed it on theirs and a thicker coat does make it much brighter.
3/8'' is plenty durable too. my folks have wood paneling in their house that is only like 3/16'' and its a little flimsy but not the stuff i put up. no one in their right mind would try to punch a hole in my walls.    pc

Thanks for the reply.

So you just overlapped like exterior siding?  I'm assuming it left edges all the way down?  Might look very nice that way!

Good to know about not plaining too -- we like rustic :)

Also, you mentioned you went up green?  Interesting!  So with shrinkage as it dried the 1 1/2" overlap would have hid the shrinkage then right?

No advice about the CSM.

Nice looking house Paul Case.

we went up green with all of it. after getting all paneling on we sprayed it and some did shrink. look at the pic of the oak paneling and you can see the white, unsprayed wood peeking out under some of the laps. the screws keep it from moving much. mostly guess work for me. i hadnt found the f f then ,but i did see the same thing done in an old rustic steakhouse. we liked it so i tried to duplicate it and now we like ours better than theirs.  pc

I used 1" pine siding on my son's house (picture below).  It was mostly cut from 10-12" Katrina logs that had been stored in my pole barn for about 4 years and pretty dry.  Treated both sides with Woodguard before I put it up, then brushed on another coat to dry in place.  Not much shrinkage but I could see how shrinkage could leave a butch-haircut white space over time...  BTW, after a year up, it still looks absolutely great.

I Love it!

Man I wish I'd just bought the mill two years ago and started milling then!  I wouldn't have spend twice as much on lumber and be wishing I hadn't!!!!

Heck I've got rough cut T1-11 on the exterior that I'd just as soon rip off as stain and keep!  Ahhh well, I'll leave it on this cabin, finish it and then make another nicer one on the top 5 acres :D :D :D

Amen!  We have 5 kids (between two marriages) and 2 grandkids so having a small compound of cabins will be nice on vacations :)  8)
