I was visiting a neighbor down the road and he said that stihl has a new chainsaw that starts itself?
He claims that the rope pull just winds up the selfstarter and then it releases and fires up.
What is the model number of these saws?
Do they work well?

Most of the smaller Stihl saws can be bought with that system, brush cutters and hedge trimmers too, and it seems to work fine.

I work with lots of volunteers at the Parks dept. and some of our older or smaller stature people have tried them and liked them. Some folks with wrist/sholder injuries still like to come out and cut wood  and use what I call (assist start feature) and it helps.

I've used a saw that has it a fair bit, an MS250, and among other things that I didn't like about that saw is that Easy2start system.

While I realize this issue won't arise for many of the people who use the saw, me and the guy I work with found that if you were out cutting in the cold and had to for any reason sit the saw down where there was snow, the condensation or whatever caused something in the Easy2start system to freeze so it stopped working temporarily.

So God forbid the saw for some reason stopped (which it sometimes tended to do when idling in those temps) or we'd be walking to the car so it could sit in the heat there to unfreeze.

I don't like that the rope needs to be pulled to the limit of it's travel before the system works. It is a bit of a challenge for those with short arms.

My mother in law has a ms250 with that starter. She doesn't run her saw often, but loves the starter. I have used it at her place and it seemed fine to me for that type of saw, not sure on a daily basis how it would be though. :-\

You don't need to do it all at once. Just let the rope recoil back in and pull some more. It won't try to turn over until there is enough tension to trip the starter.

Not that its a bad design, its just that most of us are used to feeling the compression stroke.  Didnt this idea start with Poulan on their simple-pull designs?  You pull the rope to wind the spring tension and then the engine spins once the spring is tight?  Reminds me of the old Briggs crank and spin starter...

Better yet, build one and you'll never have to use it.   ;D

To heck with starting or cutting by itself; I'd settle for one that shapened itself!  :D

How about using oregon's autosharp chain on it, that is two out of tree. :-D

SawTroll

Those starter systems do add some weight to the saws, and it looks like Stihls system is the "worst offender" in that respect, at least "on paper".  :P

What I mean to say is stay away if you don't really need it!
