I've got a good bit of Spruce available for free and I am looking to remove vinyl siding off my garage and do board and batten as the replacement.

How would Spruce hold up to the job?  The building is concrete block, so I figured on screwing strips to the block, then I can screw the 1" Spruce boards to the strips.  I understand Spruce twists but was hoping the screws would limit that.

Any ideas/suggestions?

It seems to me the battens will hold the boards flat but my experience with spruce is limited to big timbers.

Can I ask what size timbers your used to, and what you use them for?

I've got A LOT of Spruce available.   :D

For the most part the two story portion of my house's frame is Spruce, except the knee braces which are oak and a few replacement parts that are a mix of hardwoods.  Sizes run from 8x10 down to 5x7...

It's not bad to work with (especially working solo) if you don't mind a few splinters.  :D

Spruce would work fine for this purpose. I have a pole barn that we built 12yrs ago that is sided with spruce and it has held up well. Spruce timbers are O.K. But I prefer pine and hemlock. Spruce twists severely.
