Im trying to determine how much its going to cost for an extra blade for my belsaw sawmill once its up and running.  it has replaceable teeth, but would be nice to have a backup blade.
I have ran into dead ends on internet trying to locate the big blades.

Have you tried Rice Blacksmith just up the road from you in Rice MN. I don't know if they sell them but they sure have enough around thier shop. 320-393-2169  Steve

Most saw docs can get you a blade.  Where do you get your teeth?  If you're sawing full time, its best to have a backup.  When I have a saw that needs hammered, I can just take it to the saw doc and he'll do it right away.  Otherwise, he comes around to the mill once a month to sell supplies and will pick up a saw, and deliver it the following month.

Menominee saw to the left is a sponsor of the forestry forum and can help you get what you need. At least give them a call and let them know what you are looking for. Let them know you are a member here.  :)

They are a whole lot closer to you than Georgia.

i know it's good to do business with the sponsors but Rice is only 20 miles from his house, I know they hammer saws but don't know if they sell them.   Steve

thank you to whom have and will reply. im makin a list on my computer for future parts calls. i did call rice blacksmith,  he stocks and sells 52's he said. i told him what i have 40 in replaceable teeth.  (belsaw sawmill) he said he knew exactly what i had, and said thats a small blade.  also didnt give a direct $ amount on the blade but did say couple grand, but several options. I didnt wanna here that but that tells me that i need to vest in a metal detector before i fire up that mill.   I did talk to him on the fact this mill has sat cince 1978 in a shed, and i dont want to surface grind the rust off the blade, and i cant see if any cracks are present with the rust.  he said they could do it so he said its no problem but. labor rate is 60/hr    I thought about putting the blue 3 in "polishing" discs on my air die grinder,  but not shure if thats a good idea or not, i dont want to take the temper out of it or the stress in it out.  the blade is still sharp ,  buddy cut his pant leg open when we were movin the sawmill to get it here :D

my home built mill is first priority,  as i need to make posts for the belsaw with a wooden deck on it.

Jeff

Don't worry about surface rust. It'll come off eventually while sawing.

Jeff,

I think he's worried about the blade flying apart when he fires the mill up due to cracks he can't see. A wire wheel in an angle grinder will clean up the rust without hurting the steel. I've done it myself several times. It will at least get it clean enough so he can see any cracks. Sawing will get rid of the rest of the rust.

shelby, what you need is a decent used saw belsaws will handle a little bigger saw like 42"  or44"some guys go bigger but its a little iffy due to the diameter of the arbor.Scotchbrite pads on an angle grinder do a good job.Be sure you have the bits and shanks in the saw when you clean it and be carefull you don't round edges. I've only had 2 saws that have developed cracks in them over the years.  They didn't fly apart.  They just didn't saw very well, and then the saw doc couldn't fix them.  I never could see them very well, so I don't know if taking the time to remove the rust would be worth the effort.

A couple grand sounds a little high for that saw.  I can buy a 54" for that price, maybe a little less.  New saws are nice, but you should be able to find a used one for a lot less.  Some saw docs also have used ones.  Menominee might have used ones.

Sounds like you're pretty worried about metal.  Nails normally won't ruin a blade.  It hurts a few teeth.  You replace the teeth, if its too bad.  I hit a couple of railroad spikes last week.  It was on the head of the spike and the saw pushed off the spike.  Glad I wasn't cutting 2 inch.  Fixed the teeth and kept on sawing.  Sometimes nails don't even dull the saw.

I dropped off 2 blades at the Rice Blacksmith shop a few weeks ago to be hammered. They had a used blade for sale on consignment. I did not need another blade, so I did not take note of the diameter. I have seen used, inserted tooth, blades at auctions that have sold for as little as $150. An on-line auction, in Maple Plain, MN, sold about 8 of these blades in various sizes this spring for prices ranging up to $400. Stay away from any Disston blades as the teeth are nearly impossible to find. I have 2 Belsaw M-14 mills that came with 52" blades. You may be able to go to a larger blade if you have the HP to handle it?

I second trying Menominee. A few years ago (about 2007) I needed blades for my Peterson. Granted they are not your size but I was impressed. I sent them an old blade to be hammered and to copy as a pattern. They made 2 blades for me and they have proven to be top quality. They are even better than the original equipment blades. They last longer before needing hammering. Their price at the time was less than 1/3 of what a new blade cost from Peterson would have been. They were a pleasure to work with.

The guys down at Menominee saw are a pleasure to deal with. If they don't have what you need they will know where to get it or be able to make it themselves.
