V-belt

Does anyone know of someplace where I can find a v-belt by searching the #? I need to order some belts for my grandparents tractor/snowblower and no place in town carries belts fo MTD anymore. :-/

If you can determine the length of the belts most any tractor and supply, and many autoparts stores have belts by sizes.  One way to  measure it, not allowing for any streaching it may have done is to cut the old belt to measure the length.  Some of the older parts stores may still have a guage to measure the length of the belt without cutting them.

I'd try Wal-mart or one of the big department stores like that first.  They carry belts and things for mowers that they used to sell.

A trip to a Ace hardware might be in order and as a last resort, ask a small engine repair shop.  They have ways of finding and stocking old stuff that we would never guess.

If you have the number of the belt, try NAPA and/or get in touch with a belt manufacturer like Gate or Browning.

I needed a bearing for a mower in a hurry.  Called them up and the part was on the doorstep the next day UPS.  I am only 65 miles from there warehouse in KC.

For belts I go to the local chainsaw/small engine shop.  If not in stock he can get it in about two days and a lot cheaper (and nicer) than Walmart.

The last time we needed one it took forever to find one. That place has since stopped carrying them. :-/
I do have the size of one on the slip that came with the belt. The thing is, I just put that one on and it is WAAAAAAY to tight, it's working ok now but I don't think it will last long. It came from Wards and was for this unit but the one we got here in town worked a lot better. This blower eats these things for some reason. We want to get some back-ups so we won't have to shovel. ;)

Furby I have tried every belt on some things oem is the only thing that seams to work wright . That number is for our local plant they seam to be very helpful. Martin Tn ,Martin Tool & Die. You would be suprised to know their big thing is car parts.

Larry thanks for that link! I was trying to find it before and couldn't. I need to get more #'s off the tractor as the search on the site won't take the #'s for the belt.  :-/
J_T, As long as it works I really don't care who makes the belt.  ;D I just don't trust the one that is on there now and with my luck it'll snap when we get this next storm.  :

    You might try one of the link belts that you make up from segments. I've put them on several of my machines and I'll never go back to a regular V belt. They're a little pricey, but you can make up any length you want and can replace one in an enclosed space without tearing everything apart.  The first time I use one was on a lathe that would have meant taking the headstock apart to get a new belt on the pulley.  The link belt was threaded down and around the drive pulley and up over the headstock pulley and put together. Took about 10-15 minutes.  I just put 3 on one of my unisaws. You can buy lengths of it from Grizzly or Harbor Freight had it for a while, don't know if they still carry it or not.

that's also what I bought for my Massey backhoe. Otherwise I would have to take apart most of the front end to get a solid belt on. Paid about $18/ft but it was well worth it in the time savings. The manufacturer and retailer know that, that's why they are so expensive I think.  :(

I was reading about those belts while I was looking for this one. Just one ?, this belt does an L at the front end.  It starts horizontal, goes around a pulley to vertical, around another pulley and back down where it goes around yet another pulley to horizontal. Will the link belts do that in a very short distance? I belive this is the whole reason the belt keeps failing, poor design.

After a lot of calling around we managed to find a belt here in town, at least I hope it's the right belt. Can you belive they want 35 bucks for just a little V-belt?

I can only give you my opinion, but from my experience with those belts they will do anything a regular V belt will do, only better.  Wish I had an old one to send you so you could try it out, but I've never wore one out yet.

Thanks! They ended up buying the local belt for 35 bucks, just in case.  :-/ We plan to look into the link belts when this one breaks. They sound pretty good.
