I have a central boiler conventional burner.  I cut my wood to 30 inches as that keeps the wood in front of the baffel and gives me a couple of inches of room at the door.  I use all lenghts up to 4 ft but shoot for 30in.  What lenght do others use and why?  Also I am lucky the splitter my father in law built 30 years ago alows me to split that lenght as most splitters sold are 25 in. in capacity

What ever works and what you can handle. I can put a 54 inch stick in mine OWB. Ever pick up a 54 inch stick a foot through and put it into a 2 foot opening? Not something that I want to do. I can only split 2 feet on my splitter, but that is more than i want to pick up at times. My small stuff I put in whatever I saw it at,3-4 feet.

I agree with thecfarm.  I prefer 18 - 24 inches. Having some shorter chunks lying around helps fill any spaces.
My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

I cut mine about 18 to 20 inches.  The length of a Husqvarna 372.  This is also the witdth of my wheelbarrow.  I have an eclassic 2300 and I have found that loading sideways works best to prevent bridging.  This length work fine for that.

I've just got a wood stove so it's pretty much all 16" give or take a tad . I can stuff a 24" in it but one stack 4 by 8 is a face cord and 3 of same are a cord so it's easier  to keep track of that way . Not that it makes that much difference because you burn whatever you burn .

wood 4 heat

I cut our firewood at 22", that way I can get 5 rows under the wood shed. And at that length it is easy enough to handle.

I cut some short stuff at around 20-24". It is a little lighter for the other half to lift and is nice for filling gaps. The rest I cut about 40" as its less cutting and less individual pieces to handle and fills the stove up fast  8)

my outdoor boiler will take up to 44"
I cut skinny rounds up to that length but the rest at half that and then double fill the furnace

I cut 8" and larger 22 to24" long my spliter will split 25"   6"to8" i dont split  everthing else up to 4' as long as i can pick it up and throw it in the truck

Magicman

My door opening is 19", so I shoot for 16"-18".  If I have a stick longer, I can still angle it in.

Magicman, that photo shows a maximum log size for your fireplace.

I cut to my stoves maximum length of 32 inches on occasions when the wood doesn't have to be split.

When splitting is necessary, then I block to 22 inches.

I like it 20-22" here. 16" is for grannies. :D  sling_shot yikes_smiley  Well that's what I tell my firewood guy. ;)

He tries, but I'm too stubborn. I want big slabs 22", less handing and longer burn time.  He knows he'll get paid and the cheques don't bounce. ;D

I have one customer who wants her FW 10 inchs long and wrapped she puts them in the FP front to back why I don't know she says it makes a pretter fire. Later

This morning it was 50 degrees outside and all day it only reached about 54 degrees. I figured I'd fire up the wood furnace. I gotta let it out I'm afraid. Phew!! 85 degrees in here @ 50% humidity now.  Beech, rock maple firewood, 4 little small sticks over the course the day. Them coals sure make things hot. fire_smiley smiley_sun smiley_sweat_drop
