Over the past couple months about once or twice a week I have been getting offers for free logs. The "if you don't want them I was just going to burn them" phrase from about all of them. I just have to go pick them up. I've been hauling more logs than I've been cutting and the pile is getting out of hand. First bodark, then cherry, then pecan, then cedar, then honey locust, and today one guy offered a maple tree, my neighbor lady offered some mulberry logs, and an old friend offered two very large walnut trees... all in one day. With my fulltime job, school, and list of projects around the house, I don't know when I'm gunna have time to cut em all up. I guess there could be worse problems.

could be worse problems indeed.... :)

are you going to run out of space to store them? or you got plenty of room....

hackberry jake

Depends on who you ask, I still have all kinds of room according to me. My girlfriend thinks differently.

Jake you want to get rid of some or not pick some up I will.

Sounds like a good problem to have, if they keep giving em to ya for free...  you may be able to quit your job and go full time - as long as you find a niche the market pays good for.  ;D

It sounds to me like a simple scheduling problem.  Just write down a list of your obligations in the order of their importance, then divide up your 24 hours to cover them all.  Delete activities that do not bear on your priorities.  Regards, Clark

If the logs are going to sit around for awhile, end sealer is a good next step also... :)

I have been thinking about the title to this thread, and I have reached a conclusion:

A flurry is a whack on a fast timeline.

It is normal for folks to call me offering free logs.  I hauled 7 logs home this week, and my Son looked at a tree today that will easily make three 12' logs in the 20"+ diameter range.  I seldom take anything but SYP logs.

I do occasionally get an Oak, but folks usually make firewood out of them.  Since most of the trees that die here are SYP, and that is something that I can make a few $$$ with, I always take them.  SYP is absolutely my favorite species to saw and it makes up at least 75% of my sawing.

You just have to scratch where you itch.   ;D

Free logs are ok . but I dont take them no more , because sumetimes the guy that gave you the logs. shows up one day and needs some wood thats longer or wider then the logs he gave you :D so what do you do , free wood, do you just charge your sawing fee after you did the work of cutting and sticking and put away. what ever you do its akward. so now I pay for them :D :D ;D

There is very little syp around here, I suppose for building material purposes syp would probably be my favorite. I really enjoy fine woodworking and its just too simple and generic for me. Very useful wood though. I actually still haven't cut any on my saw yet.

SYP can be somewhat of a chamelian, it just depends. Fresh cut clear syp is a real joy to saw, cuts like butter, the bark is relatively soft, makes beautiful boards. On the other hand, a dry, standing dead tree is more than a little tricky, especially if it is a lightening kill. Blades wander, teeth get dull quickly, sticky reisen on the blade and sawdust sticks to that, same on the bandwheels. Nothing unusual to be sawing fine, 2 or 3 feet down the log, everything goes wrong.
