Why is the picture size limited to a paultry 15K I can't hardly even set the camera to that small of a picture... I'm trying to figure out how to shrink the pics to an acceptable size but I'm not that smart today, or I'd have loaded some pics from my mill and some from DanG's where I visited today.... More to come about that later..

The 15 kb picture limit is due to the amount of storage that is required to store pictures. Storage costs money and Jeff wanted to give the posters the ability to store their picture as long as the post was on the forum.

The reason for the 300 pixel width of the picture is because of the size of monitors.  Not everybody has big monitors and the pictures that exceed the recommended sizes blow the forum pages right off of the screens of these smaller monitors.  Heck, I've got a pretty good size screen and have had some humongus pictures blow the forum off of my screen.  Picture width has more to do with consideration for the other members than just being a rule for the rules sake. :)

Have you clicked on the Forum Gallery in the banner at the top of the page and looked at all the pictures that are being stored?

Jeff

Maybe take some lessons from Mrs. Stump Jumper.

I understand about the size and cost issues, and it's not my call or place to complain, just a noisy inquiring mind, and a small one at that.

I'll find a way to reduce 'em and cooperate

Eric,
It's easy.  Download the free demo of xat.  www.xat.com  and read the instructions in Forum Tools at the top of the page. :)

Ok I got it, I may have to buy the registration code, the real question is which version is the best to throw away money on ?

Not that I need to

Jeff

No it's my natural state of grumpyness, General frustration about everything, I've spent years working in an environment where being technically correct or at least constructive argumentativeness about corectness  is a good thing....

Now I'm just generally abrasive and too outspoken. Thats why I don't get on line as much as I used to.

I really got a case of the..  #@# at another forum due primarily to their members turning it into a "my namebrand vs all other namebrands" I complained to the moderator with no response or public comment. I had my say and basicly quit them except for an occasional looksee.

Don't pay no mind to my comments, they are not ment to be so blunt just consider me 40 grit.

FeltzE,

Being that your 40 grit and this is not paper. Maybe you should consider the new handle of:

Sandweb or Sandnet

I don't mind having something gritty to smooth conversations with. :D  :D

Hi Jeff
Now I understand the reasons for the limit on the picture size (and I aint paying for the storage or bandwidth ;) ) But is it an option to increase the limit slightly, another 5 or 10k would allow much clearer images? If this has already been discussed to death just ignore this post  :D

The Demo version of XAT doesn't cost you a thing and does everything that is required, as far as optimization, to put pictures on the forum.  If you want to lighten or brighten or retouch then you will need other photo packages to take care of that first.  Jeff uses the JPEG optimizer and I use the IMAGE optimizer.   The Jpeg may be faster but I like the "more" options available on the Image optimizer.   If you play around with them, you will find that they are quite helpful.  I use them a lot for emailing and putting pictures on my website.

It's a good idea to keep your original picture untouched somewhere so that you always have a backup.  Do your work on copies of the pictures. :)

Jeff

Actually, I dont use either anymore. I upgraded to adobe photoshop 7.something or other and it has an awesome compression tool that does multiple formats. Its an expensive tool though, the only way I could justify it was the web design business so I could right it off.
