New **miller**taper log (centering the pith???)

     Hi everyone. This week I used my new used mill for the first time (what a nice feeling, even when I'm dreaming I'm milling....any cure for that?????). I logged ±50 logs to the mill and the biggest are still in the forest (over 100 more), because I have to use the tractor to log them, some are 24 in. white pines and some 16 to 18 in spruces and hemlocks (but now the trails are too wet so I'll wait a bit).
    So learning is fun and I'm using all the experience learned on this forum...
    When I,m milling head logs ( lower quality but still very good lumber) ,those are smaller and taper, so suppose the log is 8 in. at the big end and 6 in. at the small end, do you use a 1 (one) in. block to lift the small end so the pith will be more centered (for the open cut and the second cut)or you do not bother with that.
This week I milled some 12 in. white spruces the cut are not wavy, I even sharpened a blade and used it and to my surprise It cut straight ( learned on this site...thank you all )....How do we avoid saw dust in our underwear ????? :D :D

Roger; You're right with putting a 1" block under the small end of the log to level the pith!

Most people will "level" the log, but some will just start cutting with the log just laying on the bunks!

Either way will work, but it can make a difference in what the lumber looks like!

Yes always raise the small end with wedges or whatever.  Many times the actual pith will be off center on one or both ends.  In those instances, I find it best to level the center of the log (not the pith) with the bed of the sawmill.  Making two long wedges and driving one in from each side is easy.

i dont know what you do in your parts,  around here we wear clothes outside.

I just use 2 inch blocks and put the small end of the log facing the saw,the sawdust will be every where ears ,eyes ,wallet ,cellphone.

My leather apron keeps da sawdust outta my pockets.   ;D
