as a few know, im looking for a saw to complement my mill.
id like to replace the 036 with something with a little more power for them wide rips

tryin to sell me a husky is like tryin to sell me a deere

id hate to spend on a saw that cant be developed into a modded woods saw, and think that dolmars are the most versitile saw for the woods. personally im not interested in hot roddin my 36, cause i know it can only go so far. i may be up for a pp64, but some say i wont be happy with the price of the top end for an upgrade in size

like to hear some thoughs of this much dragged out discussion, help me buy my first pro saw

If you already have a 036 you have already bought your first "pro" saw

You can develop any of the major name brands pro saws into a modded woods saw.

Sounds pretty bias to me if you want a GREAT  modded woods saw the 372xp is a good way to go, and that is coming from a Stihl guy

Just like everyone else over on ASite. I say go with a 7900. Its the same weight as the 73 and 64 so why mess with the the smaller crap. If price is the only thing holding you back. I would save for just a little longer. I have kicked myself in the butt too many times for going the cheap route. It always ends up costing more in the long run.The 6400 is about a pound more than an 036 and just a smidge more power I dont think you will be happy with that at all, other wise you would just get another 036. I also think a 6400 is too small to mill efficiently with.

372XP?
sounds weird

appreiceate your thoughts.
havent even looked at prices yet, think the thirty six was a bit much, and i wouldnt call it a pro saw, its fast, but i think my super xl can outrun it, not in speed but in weight.
startin to dragg my butt with sthils, ran a 46 a bit this winter, and i cant say id take it over my homeylite
ran a few fo fos and can say the same, too heavy for the woods, too light for a mill
ran a six six and the category aint close, seems stihl skipped a whole generation there

Huskies will cost much less than a comparable Stihl, at least if you go on line to buy.
A lot of huskies are being modded with very good end results

Now, you seem to be looking for a light weight milling saw??

Isn't that an oxymoron (no disrespect meant to your ox)?
If you want to mill, you want a big saw, if you want to run around the woods and not get wore out, you want a smaller saw.

And that statement about the
?372xp sounding weird" What do you mean???

If your looking to move up in size a little bit from your 36, a 372 might be just what you want. There is a lot of good info posted about 372's.

I bought a Husky 372XP about 4 years ago and its been a good saw I also had a 394 with a 36" blade. I use the 372XP for cutting timber. I used the 394 for the big trees but is pretty heavy to be using in the woods. I sold the 394 for $400 and bought a new Stihl MS310 for light duty work. It seems to be a pretty good saw, so good that I'm now using it to cut timber with. Its pretty light and also cheap to buy at $369. As for using one on a sawmill get a very big one, the bigger the better. These big saws are very high priced so you may want to look around for a good used one that someone has discovered is too heavy to pack around in the woods.

Or the next option is to just start buying parts and build your own frankenstein machine :D I bet that would be MORE expensive than just buying a new saw though.
Let there be saws for all mankind!

Hi RanD,

That`s an interesting article regarding the Dolmars against the competition even if it does display a hint of favoritism toward the Dolmars.

The 7900 is a very impressive saw when compared to the 385xp and MS460 because it`s lighter and cheaper(street price, not MSRP) and it`s not in the same league when compared to the MS440 and 372xp which it weighs the same as. The 7900 is very well done indeed and is proving to be well built and durable. Now hopefully the US and Canadian(Makita) dealer network will catch up so that widespread support can be found.

The 7300 in the form that it`s found in here in the US runs comparably to the 372xp and MS440, no stronger. This has been pretty well established by several guys who are running them, both orange and blue+silver. Still a d@mn fine saw though.

What disturbs me about that article however, as it is being pushed around the internet by persons such as yourself, is that the version of PS5000 tested in that article is not and will not be available here in the US and probably not in Canada either. From what I understand, Dolmar cannot make that model EPA compliant with the Walbro carb that the Euro version sports, and which apparently makes the saw run stronger. I have been told that after many fruitless months of R&D trying to make the PS5000 both EPA compliant and faster/more powerful than the competition, Dolmar was unsuccessful. Either the saw was compliant and would not cut with the industry benchmarks in the 3 cube class, the MS260 and 346xp, or it wasn`t even close to compliant. I understand that at this point Dolmar is working with Tillotson trying to find a suitable carb that satisfies both needs and will eventually try Zama if this doesn`t pan out. I`d like to see Dolmar successful in their efforts since the 3 cube saw is most versatile and practical for many people.

What can you tell us?

Hi Russ,

for my knowledge, the PS-5000 is in this class the saw with the lowest raw emissions. This is an effect of the DOLMAR High Performance Combustion. There is no trade off between high performance and low emissions!

The production for the european market just started. I think you will find the machine next year on the US market.

I've been thinking about a new saw for a couple of years now. I don't use one but for my own firewood although I expect to be cutting more in the future. Although I have 2-3 saws my favorite is a 1977 vintage Stihl 041 Farm Boss that is the original Energizer Bunny  8)

Being open-minded I had been considering trying out a Husky but as of late thinking Dolmar...

Yesterday I look up the nearest Dolmar dealer who turns out to be relatively close to check them out. Upon arriving I also found out they are also a full-line Stihl dealer. Of course they're not one I've used as they've only been in business about 15 years and I haven't bought a new Stihl in over 25  :)

Now to the point: I walk in asking about Dolmar and the salesman just about gives himself a hernia switching me to talk Stihl and goes to the brink (but not over) with carefully veiled negative speech directed at Dolmar  ???

Any thoughts?

Is the margin on Stihl and/or Dolmar's distribution practices causing retail dealers to act this way?

i've been looking at getting the 7900 and from what i've been reading, stihl has reason to be afraid.lighter, lower profile, takes mods well and just looks cooler.not that i don't like stihls,it's just every time i hear about the 7900,it's good things mostly.
