We had our woods thinned out this summer and have about 35 cord of tree length sitting out back. The wood is mostly 12 inch and under ash, maple & beech. Talking with a friend of mine this week he told me that summer cut maple will sour and get punky real quick unless you cut it up stove length.
He says that winter cut is fine only summer cut is the problem and only the maple.
Is this known to any of you?

i didnt think there was any hard wood on that island. the maple will be fine

Is your friend a flat lander??? I would be more concerned about the beech, but it will all be fine. I'm not one of these my wood has to be perfect guys either. If it burns I am happy with it.

Again I would not be too worried about the maple.  I would cut any white birch and any beech first both go punking quicker then I like.

Not sure the real difference from you alls northern maple and our missouri maple, I did get a large yard maple a few years ago, about 22", it was cut in early summer, did not get around to it till later that fall, it got soft, I could not believe it, just saying this is missouri, so not sure about what you have laying,
only have a few chain saws I'm not suppose to use, but will at times, one dog Dolly, pretty good dog, just not sure what for yet,  working on getting the gardening back in order, and kinda thinking on maybe a small bbq bizz,  thinking about it,

I don't know if there is any hardwood on Isleboro.  ;) I don't live there, the barn in my avatar is one that we built.
Yes, he is a flatlander, but has cut a fair amount of wood.
It sounded odd to me as well but I have always cut in the winter or late fall so I did not know. I have run into punky beech as well as birch.

You don't fiddle around with maple .Either process it into fire wood or mill it into lumber in a timely fashion .Don't just cut it into rounds ,split and stack the stuff .If you don't by about first of May next year it will be growng mushrooms .

Hard maple ( sugar maple ) in the round will last longer than soft maple ( red maple ). Beech and birch rot faster.

I cut some birch early last winter, dident get around to splitting it untill last week. It had small musharooms and stuff starting on it but it was perfect inside. Also.. this tree was laready dead when i cut it so it isent like it was a fresh one.

most of the offshore islands in maine dont have any hard wood, so the firewood comes over on the ferry. i used to haul some to isleboro years ago. back before the new ferry. by the time i got to where i was going there would be a long line of cars behind me. all asking if i would please sell them some. the islands are spruce country some of it pretty big
