Because of the many references to Sweet Gum lately, I thought it important to point out an important topic in the history of Sweet Gum on the Forestry Forum.  The topic is one of the very very few "Read Only" topics on the Forestry Forum as it was locked a few years ago to preserve something, I forget what, but whatever it was it is still being preserved.  It is sort of a must read for forum members that have never read it, and it should be read in its entirety.  :)

That's an entertaining read...Thanks for bringing it back up for us.

That was some of the most spontaneous, creative humor I've ever read.  Another one of those threads that needs to be in the Forestry Forum book.  A priceless keeper!
My father once said, "This is my son who wanted to grow up and become a doctor.  So far, he's only become a doctor."

Magicman

In it's entirety, and indeed enjoyable and entertaining.  I even saw a reference to a "Southern Food" there.

Thanks Jeff for preserving the integrity of that masterpiece.

That is PRICELESS reading. I wish I'd have met Tom, Bro Noble, and Mark before they went to meet their maker. Makes me realize just how fortunate we are to some of the other older more experienced guys (like DanG and the Magicman :D) still around making their contributions. :)

I think pig roast attendance should be mandatory for anyone who has been a FF member for more than 6 or 8 years. 8) Even if they happen to live out in the middle of a big cornfield in Ohio! ;D

I hope to get a lot more people to commit to coming to the the Pig Roast this year. It will be the 10th annual, and hopefully we can do it up right. :)

At the risk of jinxing myself once again, so far I'm scheduled to be off this time. Still a long ways out though.

Well, if ya didn't schedule it at the staat of the Mitch-i-gan winter, might could more of us Sutheren folks would be willin to cross that Macy-Dixie line and head your way.  It IS in August if I recon rightly! Oh, wait, (as the southern accent goes away) I'm from Michigan...they tell me down here, once a Yankee, always a Yankee!  You would think that after 30 years living here, I'd be naturalized by now!

Seriously though, I once visited my dad in Houghton Lake during the second week of July!  It never got over 65 degrees from Houghton Lake all the way to Paradise in the U.P.!  Where I lived, it was 30 degrees warmer! Oh, for you Southern gents (and gals), if you think skeeters are bad here, go to Paradise, MI in the U.P.!  Never in my life have I seen them that bad.  Might as well been in a South American swamp ('cept for the freezing 65 degree temps in the U.P. in July!)

Oh, that thread was quite the history lesson!  I learned a lot!

We get a pretty good turn out because a great deal of the Forestry Forum membership understands and appreciates why we have it where we have it. Which happens to be the home of the Forestry Forum. You can ask anyone that has ever attended if your description of our state at pigroast time is anything close to accurate. Especially the many many southern ladies and gentlemen who make the trip. Tammy and I do the best we can and apologize  if it falls short for some.  :-\

We have only attended the last two, but I see no reason for an apology.  You, Tammy, and also your children are wonderful hosts.  I have never felt more welcome anywhere else, plus the wonderful companionship of the other members and sponsors......and the food.

Jeff!  I don't know if you just don't like me or are just too sensitive!  I lived in your state, MY homestate for the first 20 years of my life.  I know what it's like there!  Come on, man, lighten up!  I was trying to fit in with the humor already present in the thread you brought back to life!

I LOVE MICHIGAN!  Really!  I want to move back every time I visit, until the reality of cold slaps me in my face!  I don't intend any disrespect to you or your wife Tammy or your children.  Please don't take my exaggeration of the weather in Michigan as a slam toward you or your family!  I can tell you have a big heart and are genuinely a great guy!  Now I feel bad....

Oh, BTW... I wasn't exaggerating about the time I visited my dad.  It was 2007.  Really, 65 degrees and rainy the whole week...all the way to the UP and back... I was cold and had a chill the whole time...

The humor part missed me too. ;)
Toss in some smiley's when you crack a joke, subtle as it apparently was. eh?

like :)   ;D

Jeff and Tammy put heart and soul into the pig roast and every breath of every day before they fret about the weather and how it might affect the good times.
But really, no matter the weather, this bunch will have a good time whatever.

I'm sure that when the ol man re-reads your post he'll see the humor in it. :D
He was probably reading from his phone while hunting.
Gotta give him a little break. If you'll notice, he's WELL over 50, up over the hill, and picking up speed!

You ought to plan a Michigan visit around pig roast time. Some of the most interesting folks I've ever met have showed up there. 8)

As I said as I was leaving the 12' picnic and as was concurrently caught on video and then posted on this very forum and youtube, I have every intention of attending the 13' Pig Roast!

I have to say, Jon, that anyone who would ride a motorcycle for 1000 hours straight thru without stopping to attend the Pig Roast is my hero  ;D.  (Well, maybe it wasn't quite 1000 hours, but close  :)).

I once rode a motorcycle from Charleston, South Carolina to Pocatello, Idaho in 3 1/2 days, which only felt like a 1000 hours...

Course part of that time dialation effect was because it rained all 14 hours the first day...

I can not believe there is a place that has more biting flies than Goding Hill,Maine. Everyone that comes see me has a fit about them. I sure don't like them, but I'm in the woods and I guess that is the price of it. I still have more rocks than flies in mid June.  ;D
