I am only getting a couple months out of my spikes on my boots. I was wondering if you guys had a preference for what brand you replace with. I am in really rocky ground, boss's son got him some hardened steel spikes, I figure they will break on the rocks??? Anyway any suggestions will help. Oh, they are Hoffman boots if that makes a difference. Thanks!

Sorry for improper jargin (spikes) possibly corks?  ::)

If you're on real rocky ground, you're going to wear them down pretty quick. I've never tried hardened calks, I get mine from Bailey's when I need them.

You might need to consider them disposable like chainsaw chain or teeth on a backhoe bucket?  Thanks for the question. I might lern ;D something!

You should get a year out of them. I work on rocky ground thinning and get two seasons from them.

Mine come from Deakin Equipment in Vancouver, but I suspect they are all the same unless they are Chinese knock-offs.  ::)

Make sure you have the little caulk wrench to replace them if you order some. These type screw on. The boot soles have threaded inserts. :)

If they are the inserted studs like on tires, then they don't last worth beans.

ceramic caulks

hardened steel

Try Bailey's first.

I use the hardened steel and usually the boots bust out before the caulks are worn out. Thinning is very hard on boots. ::)

Thank you for the replies.

SwampDonkey, these hardened spikes are made by Phillips. I haven't tried them yet, I was a little concerned that the "base-plate" is smaller in diameter, plus I have lost my wrench and the Phillips wrench has different pin spacing. Guess I will try the hardened for a bit. Thanks again!

I get mine from Hoffmans. They seem to last longer than any other spikes I have tried.

Tungsten are the best for rocky ground.... they actually get sharper as they wear. I am a full time faller and change my caulks every couple of shifts (2-3 months) Nothing worse than dull caulks, sharper is safer!
