Best time is right now!
last bunch I did in febuary.  Soon as it was about 45 deg out, the logs gooed out the ends. July/aug went back, all the sticky mess was gone. The bark was falling off , And sawed a few then.  Then sawed afew more in october/november and had black streaks in them but were rather dry.  One inch thick dried in a few weeks . Given they werent in a stack but leaned up on logs ect.
Dont know if it was just me, but red pine and or jack pine stinks after it sits for a few months.

It's best to not cut it in the summer due to bark beetles.  Around here a lot gets cut in the spring on sandy ground when they can't operate on the more mesic sites.

Around this area, most R/Pine, and Pine in general is cut Jan/Feb/Mar time frame for sawing in April-May-June!

Of course there are some who saw all through the winter months and then, the stain wouldn't be a problem.

Cut it in the summer and it will usually have blue/black stain through it.

Thank you very much for the replies. I will have to go look and see if I can get into the area hopefully they are cutting there. Thanks

When cutting saw logs of any species the mills want them cut between, Oct, 15, to Mar. 15, they don't stain setting in a pile waiting to be sawed. This is the dry or dormant season.

When cutting logs in the summer or wet season, they have to be sawed with in two weeks, or they'll strain on you.
