black ash burl

I was out in the woods today cutting some fallen cedar trees to make rustic style furniture when I came across a black ash tree with a large burl in it. The burl is 30 plus inches across. I was thinking of selling it but I am not sure how to do it. Should I sell it whole? Cut it into slabs? Cut it into blocks? Or what? Any suggestions.

Welcome to the FF, tiny37.

I would harvest the burl whole...cut a foot or two above and below it and try to sell the thing intact. That will keep it marketable to flatwork woodworkers and turners alike.

I love burls for woodturning! Black ash makes beautiful bowls,etc.! The only thing with burls is that you never know whats inside... I recently got a nice 17" yellow birch burl.. not sure how it will turn out but I gave the guy 15$.. hopefully I can make the money back.
