I'm going to have some one cut some butternut logs for a counter top what would be a good thickness to have them cut  and how long do you think they should dry for  thanks

I would not go less than 9/4. Would probably want to finish at 6/4 or 8/4.
Need to dry to about 20% or so outside, then bring inside. (assuming you're going to air dry). Looking at months inside also.

If you know a kiln op, that would be less time. Vacuum kiln, you're looking at days instead of months!
I own my own small piece of the world on an 8 acre plot on the side of a mountain with walnut, hickory, ash and spruce.
