Hard pulling has caused me to bend out of shape two torsion springs that sit inside the starter hub. Any ideas on why the pull start would be difficult to operate?

Maybe the hub or rope pulley where the torsion spring attaches is worn. I hate these Sim-pull/easy start recoils. They complicate a really easy system of a flat spring retracting a rope pulley that has grabbed the flywheel.
You can get the EPS starter kit for $7 online.

Also, make sure it's not a restrictive piston condition -  hydrolock, ring hanging, crank bearings. If saw runs well, probably not these.

Having the same problem.  Running Poulan Pro 5020 when starter rope broke. Changed rope, but now the assist spring keeps bending. pics included might explain it better. With spark plug out works great With compression of spark plug in, is when it bends. What am I doing wrong?? Please Help!!

When installing the rope wind the pulley as far as it will go then back off one turn. Now pull the rope to take the slack out and gently release. If the rope does not fully retract it is too long.
