I watched a YouTube video about a guy making three lapping plates and lapping them to each other to achieve a perfectly flat set of plates to lap other objects to. I have very little need for lapping plates but the project sounded fun to me. Started with a 5-3/4" diameter cast iron cylinder. Cut three plates off with the band saw and lathed them all to a little over 1-1/4" thick. Then I loaded them on the cnc router and grooved both faces. I got a little fancy on one side of them. Now just waiting on the abrasive powder to come in and I'll start lapping.

I used a similar method to hand scrape three 36" cast iron surface plates. It was a LOT of work, but rewarding.
I hope my ship comes in before the dock rots!
