I wish they would have put more pictures of that beast up.  I want to see the growth rings and grain.

Im thinking that log may be a little hardened, Maybe like sawing into concrete   :laugh:

Nope. Even after all that time it's not petrified, just preserved, like a pickled Onion in vinegar.  Need to a bit careful with the drying, but it works similar to new wood. 
Now the ~30 mil year old buried Kauri wood isn't quite the same. Looks like a cross between wood and coal, but you can still see it's wood.

That stuff is amazing.  I bought some ancient Kauri a few years ago from a company that imports it.  Very interesting wood.

I had a couple cedar logs that were dug up in a peat big near here. They were taken to the university and aged by carbon dating. They said they were 2500-2800 yrs old, when I sawed them the outside was pretty rough, but the heartwood looked like any other cedar. It did have a pretty foul odor though.
