Can anyone tell me the proper way to remove this clutch? I want to switch out the sprocket to .404. do I slide off the clutch shoes, and make a tool out of a socket to fit?

There should be a notch in the flywheel where you can block it from rotating by way of a hole some place on the back place  or you could stuff a starter rope in the spark plug hole to do same .The clutch is threaded, left hand threads .According to the repair manual they had a pin spanner to go in the clutch spider to unscrew it .I'd imagine finding one would be about like finding a hen's tooth ,rare .E-Bay maybe or make one .----Info from a Homelite dealers book ,must weigh 12-15 pounds .

If you do a search on E-bay using "Homelite clutch removal tool " you can get an idea of the design .I would imagine by looking at the picture it uses three pins .

Thanks for the input, I made a tool from a socket, slid the clutch assembly off the spider onto a socket, used the tool to pull the spider and drum, cleaned and oiled, put on a new sprocket, bar and chain, ready to go. It's an older saw, but starts easy, runs good and pulls hard.
