i have had this little Husky 36 for many years and it has always performed well. However, all of a sudden there is no spark.
I have cleaned the flywheel and ign coil...they were fairly dirty from congealed oil and dust but still no go.
It is a fairly simple arragement so I can't see that much can go wrong except perhaps a faulty coil.
How do I check that?
Anything else I should check?

Thanks.
Bill.

Disconnect the switch to rule that out and try it, if still no joy replace the module. Either it works or it doesn't.

I had one do that ( different brand)
Just went from working to dead and no in between
Was bad coil
You may be able to check resistance values of you'rs against a good one before buying
Google would help with how to do this
Also what sawguy suggested with the kill switch circuit
Hope you get it sorted

After market coils are very inexpensive on ebay or amazon. I find they don't last as long as oem but if you aren't making a living with the saw , no big deal.

Thanks gents for your replies.
I replaced the coil with a new one and still no joy! As I see it the circuit is a very simple one so I can't work out what else could be wrong. The switch seems to be ok (checked with a multimeter) but in any case I disconnected the lead from the coil to the switch so that eliminated the possibility of a grounded out wire as well.
Any other suggestions?
With the cost of a new saw at only around $200 it is hardly worth having a workshop look at it because they will charge around $100.
Thanks again for your input.
cheers.

How are the magnets on the flywheel, have they gone bad ? It could just be time to replace the old girl with a new saw, looks like they made that saw from 1991 - 1997 so I'm guessing that saw has had a good long life and that you got your money's worth out of it.

Try a different spark plug and see if you have fire.

Two more items: sheared key on flywheel and incorrect clearance of coil from flywheel could also affect the spark.

sawguy21

A sheared key with CDI will allow spark but at the wrong time. The op said the problem happened suddenly which does not point to incorrect clearance unless the mounting screws worked loose.

I was thinking of incorrect clearance on the replacement coil. not the original.

Thanks "luap"....that was the problem I think. I used a piece of thin paper between the flywheel and coil to set the clearance and all is good now. Running just like a new one.
btw....the new coil came in a kit from our Chinese friends and included a carby, coil, spark plug, fuel line and filter all for A$21.50 (say US$1) delivered!!!!
How on earth do they do it and what chance have our manufacturers got of competing with them???

Good to hear it's working. For that price you could buy two or three of them for one oem. The lower quality control may result in getting one that doesn't last. In the long run I don't see their underpricing as being good for our society as we lose manufacturing base here.

That is what the consumer demands.
