Deer season preparation

A couple of years ago I planted some sycamore trees from seed I bought online.  All together I ended up with about two dozen seedlings to plant in my woods and on the edge of the woods.  After returning from our winter home this spring I noticed the deer had damaged several of the young trees.  Not wanting to let the deer rub them any more I put some field tile on to protect the most likely rubbing area supported with a steel fence post.  A couple tree reached about 8ft and others 5 to 6ft. of growth.  Even trees I thought were dead have sent out new sprouts, hopefully I won't loose them.

Those 'buttonballs' grow like weeds here. What made you plant them?

You have to protect everything you plant otherwise the buggers will destroy it. If the deer don't the voles will !

We have sycamore trees here in creek bottoms mostly and I have (had) none in my woods.  I have lost all of my mature ash trees and after having two timber harvests in the last 16 years there are some thin spots.  Eagles are making a come back in Ohio and I have recently read an article that suggests that Sycamore trees may become the next best nesting trees here.  Plus read my postscript, I don't just talk the talk.
