I have a stihl 046 with a 20" 3/8 .050 bar using 72 drag links.  I also have a partner p52 with a 20" 3/8 .058 using 72 drag links.  I have a full 100' roll of .058 chain and would like to buy a .058 bar for my stihl so i could just carry one type of chain but can't seem to find one.  My local stihl dealer is just a part of a large hardware store and are of no help - seriously they just have students running the desk.   Does anyone know where i could find a .058 bar for my stihl?

I would try eBay....or a saw forum market place.

Good thing you have the roll of .058 chain, because that's very hard to find now.

You won't find one, Stihl never used .058. For some reason the Swedes adopted it for Husqvarna/Jonsered/Partner but nobody else did. It is very popular here, the local Stihl dealer carries it.

Good to know.

I know nothing about Squeals, but I have many .058 bars for Jonsereds 80/90's. I have a partial roll of Oregon .058 chain or I couldn't use them anymore. Very hard to find in .404 skip tooth, square ground.

Not sure on price but Cannon lists 0.058 bars for 3003 mount Stihl saws:
CSB-S1-20-58-3 - REPLACEABLE SPROCKET TIP, S1 Mount, 20 Inches, .058 Gauge, 0.375 Pitch, 72 Drive Links

Cannon is top drawer but the price will likely scare him.

Why don't you just open a husky bar up. It's not hard.

Glenn

Thanks for all the replies.  I used to be a logging foreman in Algonquin Park years ago.  The .058 was very common.

So i looked up the canon bars - not much more than the stihl dealer here in town.  Canon has its own numbering system.  Is an oregon D025 mount for a stihl 046?  If it is then canon has the bar i want !

Mad Professor

oregon DO25 = stihl 3003 = cannon S1

You can nearly adapt any bar to any saw .However the narrow McCulloch 10 series bars are not the best because of a narrow heel .I usually go the other way, Stihl bars to something else using spacers on  the studs .I think .058 must have been a west coast thing at one time . I've got a hard nose 48" bar McCulloch that runs .404 by .058 .Try finding that some time .I have two loops and the very last short roll Baileys ever sold .143 drivers per loop .Not to worry when you only use it about every 4 or 5 years a loop lasts a long while .BTW the novelty of a long bar is very short lived .

I don't know if .058 was a "west coast" thing or not, but I had a lot of them when running J'reds like the 80/90 for work.

All my .058 B&C 's came from Bailey's when they were still a decent supply company for loggers.

Long bars only became a 'novelty' when collectors bought used saws that had them. Their purpose was big timber and so if you don't have that, they're pointless except for show.

I only have two " long "bars .The Mac 48 " and a 42" that fits the Stihl 084 .They were both cheap .The Mac bar actually came from Ohio with the original paper wrapping ,essentially brand new .The Stihl bar is an Oregon brand 066 size with the slot widened and it came from the state of Oregon .It was less than 50 bucks at the time .I think the 48" was around $ 45 including the shipping .
Unlike a lot of people I don't go ga ga over  chainsaw related stuff .If it's not relatively rare or inexpensive I don't buy it .
I've had people try to sell me a saw some personality once owned like that is to motivate me .It didn't .

For most of my adult life, saws were nothing but 'tools'. I've only come to appreciate collecting a few in the last 15yrs or so.

It's only as I've gotten older I've been able to look back and appreciate the quality of the saws I have used professionally.

I tried to order a new canon bar from the closest dealer to me - which was about 2 1/2 hrs away.  It started a chain of emails from 2 different company reps.  Seemed it was a very difficult task to order a bar.  They had the right bar number - its easy to find on the canon web site.  I finally told them to just forget it and i'll just buy a stihl bar from my local dealer.  Its a shame some dealers make it hard to deal with them.  I was willing to even drive down to pick up the bar.

Real1shepherd

I wonder how much of that is COVID related and stock issues? Never had a problem before in buying Cannon bars.
