I picked up my mill this past September. I have been amazed at how quickly the hour meter ticks away. This has made me wonder what can I realistically expect from a 23 hp Honda?

Properly maintained and run within it's limits that engine could give you 5000 hours. Of course some guys can break a steel ball with a rubber hammer. ;D

I've been through several engines with my mill....  I have had for 25 years sawing fulltime for 23..
The best thing I did was to start running synthetic oil..

I was going to mention synthetic oil as well, my only experience of knowing what synthetic oil does goes back to a 95 Jeep with a 6 cyl.

The Jeep previously belonged to a friend and I know he only used synthetic oil in it after I had it for a few years it needed the exhaust valves replaced due to carbon build up. The guy I brought it to to due the work said that with almost 200,000 miles on it the engine was probably not worth fixing but I said take the head off and have a look. He was quite surprised at the condition of the cylinders and said they almost looked new with no cylinder ring grove and easy to see hone marks.

Adding a bit of Lucas really makes a difference to engine life as well.  I had to pull a 6.5 out of my pickup after it dropped a cylinder (big surprise there right).  Well, the truck had sat for about two weeks before I needed to remove the oil pan to sawp onto the replacement engine.  I was rather shocked to see the cylinder walls were still coated with the Lucas after sitting for that period of time.  I use it in everything now.

I got just a shade under 6000 hours from the 18 hp Briggs on my 95 LT40. Was still running ,just tired. Replaced it with 25 hp liquid cooled kawasaki, currently showing a tad under 3000. just under 9000 on the meter. I change oil every 100 hrs, use 10W40 same as my diesel truck.

I had 5000 hours on my 27 hp Kohler when I switched to a diesel.  It still ran good, just changed oil often using regular oil.  Steve

Change your filters (air, fuel, oil, but especially air) and you'll get more life out of your engine.

Sawdust does not burn inside a cylinder.

It moves past the rings and packs your crank bearings.
