would the saw arbor shaft need to be the same length as the radius dimension of the saw , so that when you rotated it would be at the bottom of the cut or is there something else that determinds this ?

Sawhead,

the way I figured it out, that is exactly the length the saw arbor needs to be. Also, since the flange to which you would bolt the saw rotates around with the arbor, you would optimally make the gearbox just the same width as the flange needs to be.
