I was cutting over at my friends house and my saw suddlenly shut off.  It was 80 degrees out and the gas was sitting in the sun on the truck and I pored it in and cut for about 5 min, and it shut off like it was out of gas.  I started it back up and kept cutting and it did it again, and I started it back up and finished cutting.  I cut for about 30 min.  Is the saw vapor locking or is it the gas making it vapor lock, because it was sitting in the sun on the truck? :-\

If it was 80 degrees outside, and your gas and your saw were hot, it's probably a combination of the two.  And if you are in fact running your saw up in the RPM numbers you spoke of in one of your earlier posts, (" You know you can turn them things to run 14,000 rpm, which is what me and the other loggers run.  It won't hurt the saw at all to do that!  Me and the other loggers like them to run that fast. ") you're saw is running on the lean side and hot anyway.  Keep the gas in the shade, and cut easy when you're out in 80 degree weather.  Give the saw time to cool itself off.  ;)

Could I maybe have the airfilter on wrong?  I have the heavy duty filter on it and it is not a box filter.  It has the pelt on the outside of it.  Could I have that on wrong?

logger,

You`ve made statements like "that`s what me and the other loggers do" as if you have some experience, now you are asking if you might have your air filter on wrong. Which end of the experience scale are you really on? A truthful and objective answer will get you better answers because right now you look like a possible troll.

Thanks Russ.  My thoughts exactly, but I didn't say anything, as I didn't know if we had trolls here.  (Call me naive.)  That's why I didn't answer his filter question.  And I'm new here on this great forum, and didn't want to call somebody on that and start the 056 Kid battle here.

logger- I didn't mean to be offensive, and you'll notice that I indeed answered your original question, which taken out of context, along with the question about the filter, doesn't "sound" stupid at all.  But in the context of coming from a guy who says he's a logger, they're a little suspect, which is why I didn't address the filter question.  Forgive me, but a logger that's looking for advice on how to mount an airfilter on his 440 is like a police officer who needs advice on how to load a gun.  If you are in fact a logger and you do in fact need advice mounting your airfilter....well, just be careful out there.  And I'll stand corrected. ;) :)  In that case, no hard feelings?  Otherwise, my suspicion stands.

Sorry Kevin, I was just backing up my postition.  Didn't mean to stray.

As far as mounting the filter, check you owner's manual.  My 460 manual has it on page 42.

Hope this helps. ;)

where are you from logger? your problem sounds really really close to a friend of mine's.

StihlDoc

Yes, the fuel sitting in the sun could cause the gasoline to vaporize more easily and it is likely that winter grade fuel is still being delivered in many areas. Winter fuel vaporizes at much lower temperatures than standard gasoline. We usually see most fuel related troubles during the transition of Winter into Spring when Mother Nature starts bringing warmer temperatures and the remaining inventories of Winter blend fuel get delivered to the gas stations. However, it would be rare to have an MS 440 vapor lock while running since the saw's fuel tank and carburetor are well isolated from the heat of the engine and fuel that is flowing does not have as great a chance of getting hot enough to turn it into vapor. Vapor lock will usually manifest itself after shutting the saw off and then trying to start the engine within a few minutes after the fuel has been sitting in the carb and has had a chance for the radiating engine heat to raise the temperature of the fuel system components to a point where the fuel can vaporize. There are a number of other things that can cause your engine to stall; such as restricted fuel filter, restricted fuel tank vent, improper carburetor adjustments, and carburetor/fuel system or ignition system troubles. The air filter will not cause the symptoms you describe.

logger

Sprucehenry, I am from pennsylvania.  I asked my dealer today and he said that it didn't vapor lock,  he did some adjusting to it and said that it could be the fuel filter sticking in the gas tank somewhere, up out of the fuel to make it run like it was out of gas like I described.  He said if that isn't it he will tear it down and go through the carb.  Thanks for all the help guys!
