Those older PM planers were the gold standard, apparently.  I talked to a guy who resells them overseas and they are in high demand in third world countries, because they just never die, according to him.
YellowHammerisms:

Take steps to save steps.

If it won't roll, its not a log; it's still a tree.  Sawmills cut logs, not trees.

Kiln drying wood: When the cookies are burned, they're burned, and you can't fix them.

Sawing is fun for the first couple million boards.

Be smarter than the sawdust

I got a pretty old (I think it's an '04) Powermatic 209 with a Byrd Shelix head on it last fall. We just got it up and running a month ago. It's 5hp 1 phase. It's a beast! If it fits, it planes, rough or smooth.
We had to pay $3500. I thought that was kind of high for such an old machine but the old guy wouldn't budge. 6 months later, I see I didn't get such a bad deal.

Big Old Iron Planers come up on craigslist often.  Also watch auctions and estate sales.  You never know when one will pop up.

Out of curiosity I looked on Craigslist tonight just to see what showed up. There were quite a few. 2 belsaws and a few others.
