My neighbor called me and said that the logger dropped off a strange looking red skidder at their landing in preparation to log their woods. Since I could not imagine quite what the thing looked like I just had to take ride down to get a look at it. Well when I got to their landing I could not find a red skidder. I did find a big green one though with a emblem of a running deer on the front that said 648L. Much much larger than the timber jack that logged our woods a few years ago. ???

Since I did not see the mystery red skidder any where I thought maybe it was hidden up on the hill somewhere. Since there were two large logs sitting behind the green skidder and there were skid marks coming down the hill I decided to follow the trail and see where it went. Since it was a Sunday and I could not hear any saws running or any large engines running I assumed that it would be unlikely that I would meet a skidder coming down off the hill with a hitch. From the tracks in the mud it was obvious that what ever had been using the trail was using the whole width. I assumed that the cutting would be at the extreme end of the property and it was. All the way to the end of the ridge top and there was the mystery red skidder. :o ;D

Here is a picture of the machine model model and where to call for service. Wonder what a service charge is for a visit from the left coast of BC.
Here are a few more pictures that I took.

Some of the logs that they have dropped and winched to the top of the ridge for the other skidder to haul out with its grapple. I think think they are using the Koot to just line up the logs for the wheeled skidder to haul them out.

This same logging company was the high bidder on our timber sale that will be happening this summer. Wonder if the same machines will be on our job. Guess the skid trails will be a little bit wider if they are. Oh, and by the way on another thread there was a discussion on a chain hook tool. Well look at what was sitting on one of the stumps. A real live in person chain hook. How about that. :D

Be happy that the KMC is bunching for the 648.  The 648 would make a much bigger mess of your residual stand and much deeper ruts scattered all over if fetching by itself.  The kmc can float on the topsoil and steer on a dime between keepers where the 648 is guaranteed to rub up a lot more trees in a wider swath.  This keeps the 648 limited to just travelling main arteries shuttling wood to the landing.  Good setup.

It looks like youre in good hands so far.
