-It was sold as a 272xp.
-It has a orange 272xp top cover that looks newer than the saw.
-It has a plastic chain brake handle
-It has a decompression button
-It has the black vertical style S/N plate

Here is where it gets confusing.....S/N is "S100212"

Kind of looks like the "S" used to be a "5"?  Would that make it a 1995 272xp?

sawguy21

Definitely a 272 chassis, the saw likely had an encounter with a falling tree or fell off the skidder and was repaired with parts from a newer version.

Yeah, it's a 272. Or at least started out that way. I think you're right about the "s" being a "5". So, 1995, week 10. Couldn't be a 1991 cause there's no such thing as week 00. :)  272's got a deco in late 1994; earlier saws didn't have one.

SG21 is right; that saw got crunched at some point. Small decal starter is from a 266/266/61. Top handle likely from the same donar. (black instead of gray wrap) Plastic brake is correct for the saw, but was probably also replaced along with the cover and handle when it took the hit.

So, it ain't pretty but how's she run?

How do they run you ask?  Lol where to start?

I bought a 257 and the 272xp in a package deal for $300.  Started today with a compression test on the 257....155 psi.  Then started sharpening the chain and soon noticed someone installed a .325" drive sprocket with a .375" chain and bar so that saw got set aside.

Compression on the 272xp was 125psi....meh.  Took the ridiculously small 16" bar off the 272 and tried my 24" Echo bar...wouldn't fit over the bar studs so I mounted a 20" Stihl bar from my parts pile.  I don't think it oils properly but good enough for a test.  The saw has balls no doubt about it but she got way too hot in the ash logs.  Literally smoke rolling out of the flywheel cover.  Wouldn't idle hot either.  Spark plug was too lean for my liking so I richened it up and adjusted the idle speed up.  Plug looks better now but we'll see tomorrow when it gets back in The hardwood.  Dogs are missing too so I'll have to make one I guess.  I think it's going to be a nice saw.

These Husky saws look a lot like my CS-8000 Echo.  *DanG whoever decided to put the chain tensioner in the front.

Can anyone tell me if the hi jet is the hole on the left or right?

I don't k ow why some pictures are sideways they're correct in my phone

$300 for the pair is pretty good. :)

Hi speed is the outer hole; Lo is closest to the cylinder. 125PSI isn't quite enough if you really want to work the saw. Kind of due for a freshening up. Very easy saws to work on. The cylinder must be in decent shape, so maybe just a piston ring will due the trick, or an aftermarket piston. Either of those options is much better than a complete AM top end kit.

On the 257, you'll need a small spline rim to swwitch that to 3/8 from .325. If you get a drum kit for a large spline rim you're gonna run into a problem with the oil gear. If you don't have a 3/8 B&C I'd consider running it with the current .325 set up at least to dial in the saw and give it workout. Can always set it up the way you want it later.

The bar mount is the same as all large husky but stihl bars can fit with the right size cut spring for bushings over the studs.  I had to slot mine a bit for sufficient travel. Die grinder and burr worked fine.

I hate the forward slack adust screw especially with a short scrench between long dogs on a 395 ...but it sure is a simple and reliable part design.

Clean up the piston, polish the jug with the 'wigglesworth' method used by Mastermind(Randy), put in a new Caber, run a few tank fulls and I bet you'll be 160psi.

I think I may have her dialed in.  Used it a bit today to test the carb tune and it didn't get hot.  Starts easy and idles...nice.  Bought a new fuel cap because the other one leaked like the Exxon Valdez.  Also made a dog for it.

This 272 is a nice saw.  The 64cc Stihl 039 has been my go to for anything under 18" but this Husky cuts faster without the all the screaming that comes with the extra rpms...and only making 125 psi compression.  To be fair the 039 needs a new chain badly.  The 272 seems lighter than 039 too which I won't believe until I weigh them.  I KNOW it's lighter than my 80cc Echo but she won't hang with the Echo just yet.

Thanks for the tip.  I haven't taken the muffler off yet but looking through the spark plug hole shows practically no scuffs or scratches on the cylinder.

For tuning read up on madsens saw shops tuning page.

Its a sound in the cut thing.  Ive never read a chainsaw plug but i can hear a saw with H/L outta wack driving by in a car.   They are almost always outta wack.

2 stroking and 4 stroking.  Youve gotta learn those notes for peak performance in any weather.

Randy has a video of it. You buy a rubber mandrel and size it for your bore....it pushes down in the bore with a brown Scotch-brite pad. You move it up and down with your drill on high like a hone. Takes awhile but there's no danger to transfers and plating like with a hone.

I still need to bush the slots in the Stihl bar.  Mike....could you elaborate  on the "cut spring"? If I understand correct you found a coil spring with the right size OD and ID and shortened it to use that as a bushing?

sawguy21

The spring looks like an exaggerated S, it slips over both bar studs.

Doesn't the range of adjustment get a little tricky using a stihl bar?

It's limited for sure on mine but haven't had to massage the slots (yet)
